As a recovering high-achiever and people-pleaser, boundaries are really hard for me. But this year I got to practice setting them at the start of a job, and it significantly reduced my anxiety around work! After taking some time off and gaining momentum with The Legal Burnouts and my personal content, I wanted content creation to be my main focus. Problem is, I don't really make money off of it (yet). And while I'm privileged to have a spouse who supports me, not having my own income stressed me out. So I wanted to find something that would allow me to keep creating. Joshua Gilliland mentioned that Greenan, Peffer, Sallander & Lally LLP needed some help with eDiscovery and marketing stuff. I agreed to come on as a contractor/part time employee back in March. First, though, I was totally open about my capacity and expectations. Which was TERRIFYING! I was so worried it would be a deal-breaker. But the most important anti-burnout lesson I've learned is to set boundaries early. It's much easier to walk them back than it is to put them up down the line. When I communicated firm expectations about my hours, flexibility, and workload to the firm, they said, "No problem." And, most importantly, they meant it. This post is partially about encouraging folks to learn to set boundaries early. It's a good habit to learn. But it only works if employers actually respect the boundaries set by employees. And in the legal profession, that can be hard to find. If you're an employer, I encourage you to have real conversations about capacity, time, and workload during the hiring process. Agree on boundaries (which can include higher expectations during busier times), and then actually respect them. You'll wind up with a happier, more effective workforce. GPSL doesn't call me outside my work hours unless there's a true emergency. Every person is respectful of the limits on my time. They check in with me regularly about my workload. It's made the last 6 months fly by. And even though I'm only with them on a contract basis, they sent me this pin and thanked me for being part of the team. 😊 #employment #parttimework #boundaries #burnout #advice #lawfirm

We’re thrilled to announce our victory defending family-owned farm Thomson International Inc. against claims that their onions caused the 2020 Salmonella outbreak. A Federal jury delivered a verdict for Thomson against six plaintiffs, finding insufficient evidence that Thomson onions caused their illness.
