College athletes coaching students to a healthier future

About us

Grassroots Health has built an innovative model that provides low-cost, wrap-around health promotion programs for youth. We are a team of more than 2,000 NCAA varsity athletes and over 10,000 DC teens who are committed to making our nation’s cities healthier. Grassroots Health capitalizes on the excitement, relatability, and popularity of sports to provide much-needed health literacy and social empowerment programs to middle school youth. The only way for us to succeed is to believe in the power of youth to make a difference. In addition to providing health education to middle school youth, we invest in the leadership training, cultural competency, and professional skills of hundreds of NCAA varsity athletes who serve as our program facilitators. With our approach to re-imagining health education, schools are not only able to reach national health and physical education standards, but they are also able to provide health education in a format that students enjoy, that is community-centered, and that is led by near-peer role models. As a result of programs, middle schoolers demonstrate increased health knowledge and improve their ability to apply this knowledge in their own lives, ultimately creating positive health behaviors and habits. In addition, our college student-athlete volunteers enter the workforce ready to be active community members and champions of health equity.

Thanks to your incredible support, we raised $7,650 last week! While we didn’t hit our 10k goal, this amount will significantly enhance our programs this semester. We can now expand Grassroots Health services to more middle school classes and boost resources for our students and student-athletes. A special SHOUTOUT to all GW-alumni donors for making up the majority of the contributions! We’re excited to kick off our fall programs and share the impact of your generosity along the way. Keep following along for content as we start up programming and the training of new NCAA athletes!

Remember racing to get to class before the bell? The panic of forgetting your #2 pencil on exam day? Or that sprint to the bus stop, only to see it pull away? We remember too, and as we prepare for the upcoming school year, we’re committed to making sure our students are fully equipped to succeed. We need your help to make this year our most impactful yet. From today until Friday, we aim to raise $10,000 so we can add three more classrooms to our program line-up for the 2024-25 academic year! We have a generous donor who will match up to $2,500 that’s raised TODAY. Let’s make the most of this offer! Whether it’s making a direct contribution, getting your networks involved, or sharing this campaign, you’re helping us grow our impact. Your support ensures we can partner with even more schools and reach as many students as possible. Let’s work together to ease those first-day jitters and set our youth up for success. DONATE HERE: https://lnkd.in/gDQg6dZv or VISIT HERE: https://lnkd.in/gHy5r8rG for our MERCH store, cool GRH gear that also supports our work, win-win!

It is bittersweet to share with my LinkedIn community that after five rewarding years at Grassroots Health, I have decided to move on to my next adventure. During my time on our team, we built our volunteer base, expanded leadership development opportunities, deepened school and community relationships, created systems and tools for greater impact, and so much more. Nearly 13 years ago I walked into the auxiliary gym at GW for a training aimed at getting student-athletes involved in the DC community in a more meaningful and impactful way. My time as a Grassroots Health volunteer in those earlier years ignited my passion for education and social justice, setting me on a path committed to mission-driven work for life. While I’m excited to share what’s next for me in the coming weeks, I want to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt appreciation to Tyler Spencer and Jane Wallis for their incredible leadership and mentorship. And a huge thank you to our staff, volunteers, school partners, and community, who’ve filled my time on staff with joy and laughter and who’ve given countless hours in service of our mission of advancing health equity through health education in DC. As I prepare for this transition, I am excited to support our team in launching two new roles; one operational and the other that will help build and support our evaluation infrastructure. I’m calling on this wonderful network to be on the lookout for those opportunities (launching Monday!) and share with your network. I can’t wait to see what the next 5 years and beyond have in store for Grassroots Health.

Our [team] had an incredible time volunteering with Grassroots Health at their Connect event earlier this month! Engaging with 500+ adolescents from all over the DMV area at Georgetown University, we facilitated a fun plank contest and shared fitness and wellness tips with the students. Grassroots Health's mission to educate young DC residents on topics related to nutritional, sexual, and mental health aligns perfectly with our mission here at [solidcore] -- to create the strongest version of yourself. This is just the beginning of our collaboration to inspire a lifelong passion for fitness and wellness in young people. #CommunityHealth #YouthWellness #GrassrootsHealth #Volunteering
