Making the “drive” toward #cattlevoltaics! We have been involved in great discussions lately about getting our #cattle into #solargrazing just like our #sheep. Stay tuned for #solarcattle. Our plan for the next phase of herd growth is the reach 100 brood #cows through a combination of natural increase & purchasing additional animals. Solar grazing is a global opportunity for producers, if set up properly!
Solar grazing - sheep rentals - is worth somewhere in the region of $US4-5 billion in the US these days. Basically, as solar farms spread, vegetation management (ie keeping the grass down) is becoming a new facet of an ancient business. However, in Australia it's not all that easy because even though they talk a big game about agrivoltaics/agrisolar, solar developers aren't designing projects with animals+machinery in mind. Sheep are still an afterthought, in many cases. Some lovely people talk through their ventures and the issues in this piece for RenewEconomy. Karin Stark is one of them, as is Ben Wynn.
A multi-billion dollar solar sheep rental industry is taking shape in Australia

Look at all that ground cover!
How many sheep per acre? It’s a question we get asked all the time. It’s not always simple. There’s no “silver bullet” or constant prescription that’s appropriate all the time. Listen to our latest podcast episode about Sheep Math! https://lnkd.in/gvHmijWC? Photo from a recent site visit to bid on grazing. #SheepEmpire #solargrazing #agrivoltaics #GraysLAMBscaping

Rain rain rain… ‘tis the season. Just another reason sheep on solar for vegetation management makes sense. They eat no matter the weather and they won’t get stuck or mess up the ground. We work so hard to connect the dots for all involved: Power company, EPC, O&M, and any other third party contractors that may be involved. For us it’s not just about getting sheep on site, although that’s super important to us. For Gray’s LAMBscaping, LLC it is about best practices and long term accessibility and functionality of the site. Bring us in early, let’s design, plan seeding, create a crew that is thinking about the next 30+ years not just the next 2. None of the practices seen on solar so far have to be mutually exclusive. Let’s get the farm back to these fields. Harness the power of the sun, graze sheep and other animals with a multi-species rotational approach, let’s plant pollinator fields so the bees, butterflies, and birds will thrive. Graze the fields off after the pollinators are done. Plant some crops to harvest and then graze them off before replanting the next season. - let’s get this done at scale to prove it can be done. The 2 big words that I associate with Solar arrays right now are OPPORTUNITY and DIVERSIFICATION. There is such an opportunity for farmers young and old, new and generationally experienced. Age is no barrier. We have seen the data in America and across the world, farms that don’t diversify fail. Let’s get these sites producing so that fluctuations in market values will have little impact to the farmer. We are still going strong on our podcast called Sheep Empire on Spotify. We cover lots of information like this. Give us a follow! #solargrazing #rotationalgrazing #sheelonsolar #grayslambscaping #solarsheep #farmHER #agrivoltaics #agrisolar #sheepempire

Kudos to Energy Right's own Chloe Hodges for this excellent piece in the Cardinal News this morning! It's clear to those paying attention that solar energy can and should be a benefit to Virginia's sacred natural resources and beauty. "Solar is a new industry to the Virginia countryside, and therefore an easy one to criticize or doubt. Every land use from farming, to timbering, to more intensive development brings both benefits and burdens. When integrated thoughtfully, solar energy represents a commitment to providing cleaner, more abundant, Virginia-made energy to our homes and businesses while promoting sustainable land use practices that protect the Chesapeake Bay." This is Clean Energy the Right Way!
