In response to Hurricanes #Helene and #Milton, Greater Good Charities is partnering with Southwest Airlines® and Lucky Dog Animal Rescue to deliver humanitarian supplies to communities in crisis in North Carolina. Then, today the GGC team and Southwest employees will load 145 pets who were in shelters prior to the storms onto a donated Southwest Airlines aircraft. They include these cats and dogs Sharona, Tova, Avery, Jimmy, Lucian and Pilot! After working with a local licensed veterinarian from Banfield Pet Hospital to examine the pets and provide health certificates, we’ll airlift them out of the Southeast to the Midwest to find new homes! This emergency transport of supplies into impacted areas and shelter pets out allows us to support more displaced and injured pets from these disasters and the shelters caring for them. Greater Good Charities is responding to needs of communities impacted by Hurricanes #Helene and #Milton, including sending 122 trucks' worth of $6.5MM in humanitarian aid and pet products across 5 states to more than 41 communities. We’re also flying adoptable shelter pets from shelters impacted by the storms to make room for the influx of missing or lost pets.   When Tom—an Ameriflight, LLC captain working with us to transport pets this week—met little Colin at the shelter prior to takeoff, it was love at first sight! Now Colin’s going home to his new family and many other shelter pets are on their way to new homes too.   Thanks to incredible supporters like YOU and dedicated people like Tom, more than 15,000 pets have been rescued by these lifesaving transports. Hurricane #Milton made landfall last night as a dangerous Category 3 storm. Communities are grappling with catastrophic landslides, historic flooding, and relentless rainfall. Millions of people are without power, and homes, streets, and businesses have been damaged or destroyed. Greater Good Charities' Field Operations teams and volunteers have been on the ground in Florida and the Carolinas, where we have already deployed 48 truckloads of assistance and millions of dollars in aid, including food, water, hygiene products, pet food and pet products, with many more trucks on the way. Our teams are coordinating with dozens of local, state, and national partners to deliver assistance as efficiently and effectively as possible. The Greater Good Charities team on the ground in Florida is bracing for Hurricane Milton’s impact. Our field operations team in North Carolina remains committed to helping those impacted by #Helene.   This week, we’ve distributed humanitarian supplies, including hygiene products, shampoo, and emergency packs with items like blankets, socks, and more, as well as pet food and supplies to families in and around Asheville, NC.   We spoke with one young woman from the hard-hit community of Chimney Rock, who came to pick up supplies. With her baby in her arms, she told us that everyone in her community is without power and water. As one of the few with an undamaged vehicle, she drives to distributions like ours to bring back as much support as she can to her neighbors, many of whom work in agriculture and thus aren’t sure if and when they’ll be able to get back on their feet.   This is just one of many gut-wrenching stories we’ve heard in the field. An estimated 95,000 beehives have been damaged or destroyed in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and surrounding states by Hurricane #Helene. With many of their natural food sources wiped out, surviving bees face starvation. Now, as #HurricaneMilton draws near, beekeepers in Florida are urgently moving their hives to safety. But the storm threatens to destroy the last bits of forage, deepening the crisis for these vital pollinators. With Florida and other southeastern states still in the early stages of recovery from Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton, currently a Category 5 storm, is now brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to hit Florida's Gulf Coast on Wednesday, threatening a deadly storm surge and even more urgency around Helene clean-up efforts. Greater Good Charities' teams are already on the ground in Florida and North Carolina.
