The adaptability of Green Software Patterns means we don’t need to completely rewrite our software architecture to make it more sustainable. 🧩 In the recent episode of Environment Variables, Green Software Patterns project leads Liya Mathew and Franziska Warncke share insights into this open-source initiative, helping software practitioners reduce emissions with vendor-neutral best practices. Learn how organizations like AVEVA and Mastercard have successfully integrated these patterns, how small actions can lead to significant changes, and how you can get involved. Reducing software's carbon emissions requires trusted, actionable guidelines, but key resources are often scattered across various sources. 🔍 To bridge this gap, we launched Green Software Patterns in 2022—a catalog of practical examples for building greener software, covering AI, Cloud, and Web. Last year, GSF members participated in a design thinking workshop to enhance the Catalog. The goal? To make it more relevant to a broader audience, address specific user needs, and provide actionable implementation guidance. In our recent article, we share key insights, observations, and next steps in shaping the future of Green Software Patterns V2. Decarbonizing electricity sources alone won’t solve the sustainability challenge of AI services. ⚡ A recent study explores the environmental impacts of Generative AI (Gen AI) as a service by adapting the life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. Through LCA modeling, the research reveals that client-side energy consumption and the use of rare metals mean that decarbonizing the energy used for training, serving inference, and hosting the model won’t be enough to mitigate its environmental impacts.
