Empowering a sustainable world by connecting individuals and institutions with investments in clean energy.
About us
Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company is an independent power producer (IPP) and a leading climate-focused investment manager (IM), whose mission is to empower a sustainable world by connecting individuals and institutions with investments in clean energy. Since our founding in 2011, we’ve grown to over 180 employees in four offices—New York City, Portland, ME, Denver, CO, and Montpelier, VT—and other individual locations across the US, and have positioned ourselves as a market leader in energy transition, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure investments. Greenbacker’s IPP business segment acquires, owns, and operates income-producing clean energy infrastructure projects (e.g., solar energy, wind power, energy storage) in communities across the country. These assets sell power under long-term contracts to high-credit-quality counterparties, including utilities, municipalities, and corporations. As of 2023, our IPP fleet comprises over 450 projects, representing 3.4 gigawatts of total clean energy production and storage capacity. Within our IM business segment, Greenbacker Capital Management (GCM) serves as the registered investment adviser to five funds focused on green power generation and the energy transition, including private equity investment in growth-stage clean energy companies, across a wide range of sustainable infrastructure and renewables sectors. Greenbacker is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals. As part of this commitment, Greenbacker will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations. If reasonable accommodation is needed to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and/or to receive other benefits and privileges of employment, please contact Nicole Giangiulio (nicole.giangiulio@greenbackercapital.com). Congratulations to Perennial Power Holdings, Inc. which has established a joint venture with our portfolio company CEP Solar (Commonwealth Energy Partners). “Since our initial investment in Commonwealth Energy Partners in 2021, the company has scaled rapidly to advance its pipeline of scale-diversified solar and storage projects in Virginia. We believe Perennial Power’s success in developing and operating renewable infrastructure projects best positions it as the ideal partner to support Commonwealth’s growing pipeline.” - Trixie (Ligon) Blair, Principal at Greenbacker Capital Management’s Development Opportunities Fund I. Congrats to the entire Commonwealth Energy Partners team, and we’re excited to see how this joint venture will lead to more solar and storage projects in Virginia! Great to see our portfolio company, Lightshift Energy, recently featured in Canary Media Inc. for their success in enhancing grid resiliency in Massachusetts. As we navigate this year’s active hurricane season, backup power for community facilities—especially schools—has never been more important. That’s exactly why Lightshift is developing a microgrid to support two local schools in Wakefield, MA, to ensure safe and reliable energy access in the event of unexpected outages. Read more from Jeff St. John on how Lightshift is working with Wakefield to install grid-connected battery storage.
In today’s Canary Media Inc. feature, Jeff St. John sat down with Lightshift’s co-founder Michael Herbert to hear how we’re strengthening communities through energy storage in partnership with Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC) and municipal utilities across Massachusetts. We’re delivering projects where they matter most, translating to local economic development, resilience, and grid reliability. Check out our latest community-led project in Wakefield, MA to see how storage can create value through peak-shaving while also providing backup power to critical facilities: https://lnkd.in/e7AEf7Am

S&P Global recently asked Greenbacker’s Head of Capital Markets Carl Weatherley-White to share his thoughts on how the Fed’s recent rate cut would impact renewables financing. “For Greenbacker Capital Management … interest rates do not ‘make or break deals’ because … of financing hedges” managing director Carl Weatherley-White said.”
