China's approvals for new coal-fired power plants dropped sharply in the first half of this year, according to our review of project documents showing that 14 new coal plants were approved from January to June with a total capacity of 10.3 gigawatts, writes The Associated Press “We may now be seeing a turning point,” said Greenpeace East Asia Beijing-based project lead Grace Yuhe Gao M.P.A.. However, Gao said that China should focus its resources on better connecting wind and solar power to the grid rather than building more coal power plants. #ClimateActionNow https://lnkd.in/eGqk3-YX

Following the competitive heat at the Paris Olympics 🔥, Samsung Electronics has been spotlighted among the world’s top #polluters sponsoring the Games. This calls attention to whether South Korea's new Yongin Semiconductor Cluster can effectively support Samsung Electronics' #RE100 ambitions, given its persistent reliance on #fossilfuels. As #SouthKorea advances with the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, domestic and international eyes will be watching how this project shapes Korea’s semiconductor industry and its commitment to a sustainable future. We've had ad so much fun walking the #Amsterdam #PrideWalk with Greenpeace International & Greenpeace Nederland colleagues! It was such a fun experience to march through the streets of Amsterdam celebrating LGBTQIA+ community. The Pride Walk is an annual event that brings various organizations from the civil society of the Netherlands together to show support for queer rights and visibility! We are grateful to have experienced the Amsterdam Pride Walk this year as well, and being able to show our #solidarity with the local queer community! #Pride #Pride2024 #Amsterdam #Greenpeace

"Let's not wait until it's too late. The clock is ticking. The athletes deserve better. A liveable planet demands better." A really great piece from Dom Winter of Protect Our Winters UK on the 2024 Paris Games and the future of all Olympic and Paralympic games in a warmer world. I'm so pleased to see members of the Cool Down - The Sport for Climate Action Network already using the platform to share ideas, insight and concerns about sport and climate breakdown. https://lnkd.in/eYFKmvv6

You may have seen our very own Andrew Simms chat with BBC News this week about the gruelling heat that engulfed the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. These conditions are the new norm - and the future of all sport will continue to be shaped by the climate crisis. To add insult to injury, sporting mega-events like the Paris 2024 Olympics are used as giant billboards to promote high-carbon products and services to billions. In the interview, Andrew called on the IOC and other organisers of sporting mega-events to lead by example, drop polluting sponsors, and become a global force for a rapid and just transition.
