Celebrating my new publication! 🎉 💚 Reducing plastic waste in Science by 65%   THANKS to FEBS Letters and Jana Christopher ❤️   An amazing chance to share sustainability in science : )   During my research in neuroscience, I developed 3 key principles that helped me to reduce the amount of single use items I would need.   And those I could also applied in sterile conditions, while transfecting neurons. This is what the publication is about.   If you like to use them too, these 3 questions cover them❗ Think twice whether you can use one instead of two tubes/tips/plates? Can you use an item twice because contamination is not possible? Can you use the same item in a smaller size?   For example, if you have 200uL of reagent, you can use a PCR tube instead of a 1.5mL tube – saving 50% of plastic in mass.   We need to free researchers of the anxiety of working more sustainably. You are well trained, so believe in yourself!   I learned this too – it was thanks to Jana Christopher and Daniela Ruffell Ruffel that I would publish this work in the first place!   And of course, thank you to FEBS Letters - without the support and the opportunity to publish there, we couldn’t share such amazing news. Sometimes I find out about something that really excites me. I spoke with Loïc Lannelongue and Michael Inouye for a Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) case study about their project - 🌿 Green Algorithms 👩🏻💻 They have created a carbon footprint calculator that helps computational scientists understand the climate impact of their work. Their idea came around the time of the Australian bush fires, which made them reflect on the climate emergency and the impact of their own work on the environment. Computing can almost feel like a “free” activity and it’s obviously great for research and even addressing climate change, but what good is it when in itself it is producing tonnes of carbon. Green Algorithms allows scientists to track their energy usage and consider ‘do I really need to run that extra test?' 🙏 Thank you to Debs Mathisen and Hollydawn Murray for getting me involved
