Congratulations to Hannah Liu (Hatchell), MSc for being named to the 40 under 40 2024 alumni class by the Georgia Tech Alumni Association. A graduate of Georgia Tech’s master’s program in Bioinformatics, Liu works as a senior manager in analytics for Natera. She is passionate about supporting the accessibility and affordability of genetic information to improve health outcomes. We asked this accomplished alumna 2️⃣ questions: 1. How did Georgia Tech prepare you for success? "Throughout my Bioinformatics Master’s program, I was exposed to engaged faculty, motivated peers, and challenging coursework that not only sparked my curiosity about roles and industries I had never considered, but also equipped me with the skills to pursue career paths previously inaccessible. With many resources at my disposal such as Georgia Tech’s career fairs, mentorship programs, the career center, and guidance from program faculty, I was able to secure my first job in the clinical genetic testing industry just before graduating in 2017. Since then, I’ve enjoyed frequent interactions with my master's program and its community by conducting informational interviews with current students, offering career advice on an alumni panel, and staying connected with the incredible faculty." 2. 🐝 Georgia Tech’s mission is to develop leaders who advance technology and improve the human condition. Can you tell us how you are making a difference in the world today? "The clinical genetic testing industry is exciting to me personally because it seeks to leverage advanced technologies for studying the human genome to produce actionable insights that individuals can use to improve their healthcare outcomes. At Natera, I frequently hear stories from patients who feel reassured by our clinical-grade diagnostic tests, whether confirming their cancer remains in remission or that their fetus is free of genetic abnormalities. I currently manage a team that provides access to the clinical data needed for product development, research, and publications, all for the benefit of empowering patients with the information they need to make informed healthcare decisions for themselves and their families." Benjamin Freeman has been named a 2024 #PackardFellow by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation! This distinction recognizes his groundbreaking research in climate change and bird ecology. “Packard support will be transformative. It will give me the freedom to do the sorts of risky projects that I've dreamed about, and will support the intense fieldwork that I'm convinced is necessary to understand big questions in climate change ecology,” says Freeman, an assistant professor in the School of Biological Sciences. The $875,000 award associated with this fellowship will support Freeman’s efforts to develop “Tech Mountain” in the tropics. This long-term field project is focused on surveying thousands of individual birds in order to gain insight into how birds and other organisms are responding to our changing climate. https://lnkd.in/eDVzvdTt

Our students loved the opportunity to hear seven alums discuss their career experiences, tips for success, and what to do IN college to set themselves up for success after they get OUT at the recent What Can I Do With My Georgia Tech Science Degree (Life Sciences) event. Huge thanks to our panel, Justin Burns PhD, Anthony J. Diaz, Austin Hope, Maureen Metcalfe, Kristel Topping, PhD, David Williamson, and Ashley Zuniga, PhD PMP, for inspiring the next generation of Jackets and providing such inspirational nuggets as “take a hungry, hungry hippo approach to your education” and “the scientific method is your foundation to success.” Alumni interested in our next big event, the College of Sciences Student and Alumni Leadership Dinner on October 30th are invited to contact College of Sciences Director of Alumni Relations Leslie Roberts. Students can sign up via CareerBuzz. Read more about the magnificent seven's advice and insights: https://bit.ly/4dOOdgJ Catharine Groover, James Stringfellow, Georgia Tech Career Center,
