About us

GCS is the third largest school district in North Carolina, serving nearly 70,000 students. The second largest employer in a 12-county area, GCS’ more than 10,000 full- and part-time employees enthusiastically share the district’s mission: to graduate responsible citizens prepared to succeed in higher education or the career of their choice. The district’s 127 schools, located in both urban and rural areas, include elementary schools serving grades K through 5, and in some instances, pre-K through 5. To the relief of working parents, after-school care is offered at many elementary schools throughout the county. The district also has middle schools (grades 6-8), high schools (grades 9-12), two special education schools (Gateway and McIver Education Centers), two SCALE sites, which provide an alternative to long-term suspensions, and Twilight School, which offers high school students a flexible schedule to complete graduation requirements. GCS offers parents and students a wide range of educational choices that are not usually found in public school systems, including 56 choice schools and programs. #GCSCelebrates | Guilford County Schools staff understands the importance of providing our students with equitable and engaging learning opportunities, including instruction for academically gifted students. The district’s Academically Gifted Department serves more than 12,000 students in grades K-12, with various opportunities available for rigorous advanced coursework. One of the passionate staff members helping bring learning opportunities to our students is none other than AG Coordinator Dee Jordan. A dedicated Guilford County Schools employee, Jordan has served in various roles across the district, including classroom educator, counselor and testing coordinator. Entering a room full of colleagues and loved ones via video chat, Jordan was surprised with the title of Guilford County Schools’ Employee of the Month for October. As she prepares to retire, she will leave behind a legacy of advocacy for our students and a commitment to her colleagues, inspiring those around her to strive for excellence. #ChooseGCS | Today is # PFAD24! Community members are shadowing our principals and other support staff to learn what it takes to keep our schools running smoothly. Trevonda Wright from Bank of America is a graduate of Southwest High and shadowed Principal George Green at Mendenhall Middle! With more than 900 students and roughly 80 staff members, there's a lot to keep up with at this school. For two years after the pandemic, they exceeded growth, and in the last, they met growth. People like George Green and his staff at Mendenhall are why people #ChooseGCS. 🌟💙

#GrowWithGCS | Oak Ridge Public School opened in 1925 with a capacity for 123 students in grades 1-8. The school has come a long way since then, including an expansion that incorporated the historic portions of the building. Next year, Oak Ridge Elementary will celebrate its 100-year anniversary. Penny Loschin is Oak Ridge Elementary’s principal and a product of Guilford County Schools. Her experiences in GCS helped lead her to the field of education. “Over the years I had educators who played significant roles in my life, especially my second-grade teacher, Ms. Zealy,” says Loschin. “I started out in her class unable to read and left with a passion for reading. I wanted to have that same impact.” Loschin spent time as a teacher at Stokesdale Elementary and an administrator at Northwest High before landing at Oak Ridge. While celebrating 100 years, the community reflects on the history and people who contributed to the school's success. Thousands of students have come through Oak Ridge Elementary’s doors, with generations of families staying connected to the community built around the school. This is a testament to the school's success; however, accountability data reveals that Oak Ridge succeeds on multiple fronts with the highest growth of any elementary school this year.
