As the Regional Ocean Partnership for the Gulf of Mexico, we have partners, coworkers, and friends in Milton's path. We urge everyone to stay safe during this time. And whether you are impacted by Milton, or were impacted by Helene, the “Coastal Homeowner’s Handbook” mobile app, the phone-friendly version of our tried and true “Homeowners Handbook to Prepare for Natural Disasters,” is a helpful tool to navigating the post recovery process. What we support: understanding oyster 🦪 habitat change Working with our partners at Freese and Nichols, we are establishing historic oyster habitat and identifying data gaps in Louisiana and Texas. We are also documenting oyster habitat trends and looking at local and regional threats to oyster habitat. A full project report will be available early next year and all of the mapping data will be available through our Gulf of Mexico Open Data Platform (GOMOD). This project is supported by the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration with funding provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. #gulfofmexico #oysters #goodforthegulf #texas #louisiana #habitat

20 years of GOMA: COVID 2020 was shaping up to be a banner year for the Gulf of Mexico Alliance. The Gulf Star Program was gaining momentum. Our Teams were looking forward to meeting together and planning our next Governors’ Action Plan. The “Embrace the Gulf” education and awareness initiative was ramping up, including plans for in-person events across the region and a celebratory gala event. Then, everything stopped in its tracks. In March 2020, COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic with shutdowns and emergency stay-at-home orders following shortly afterward. It was a scary and uncertain time. GOMA staff and our partners began working from home. And, for the first time ever, we made the decision to cancel our annual All Hands Meeting. As a regional organization with experience collaborating across all sorts of boundaries, GOMA quickly pivoted to the virtual world of Zoom meetings and Teams chats. We jumped in with both feet and supported our partners by hosting workshops to share virtual meeting best practices. Most importantly, we found ways to bring our community together, like mailing our Alliance Coordination Team coozies that said, “I’d Rather be at All Hands” and hosting an online social. While 2020 and 2021 didn’t look like we originally planned, we moved forward with a new vision of success. Our “Embrace the Gulf” initiative became a wildly successful social media campaign. The Alliance wrote, edited, and launched Governors' Action Plan IV. We hosted countless virtual meetings, workshops, and events. GOMA also grew in ways we never imagined, with staff now working both in our headquarters office in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and remotely across the region. Follow along as we continue to explore the Alliance’s past as we celebrate 20 years of history.

What we support: Ecotoxins research in waterfowl 🦆🦆🦆 Through our partners Dr. Jacquelyn Grace with Texas A&M University and Dr. Terri Maness with Louisiana Tech University, we are supporting research of two emerging threats to wildlife conservation on the Gulf coast: microplastic ingestion and per- and polyfluoralkyl substance (PFAS) concentration in game waterfowl. Local hunters in Texas and Louisiana have donated their duck carcasses for this research and students have worked not only to dissect and process samples, but in communicating the project with the hunting community. This project is supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with funding provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. . . . #gulfofmexico #waterfowl #goodfortheGulf #microplastics #PFAS

Our staff recently went out with Win Ellington, staff of Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith's office, to discuss our derelict and abandoned removal project, which is a partnership between the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, and us. This project will see out the removal of derelict vessels (like the one pictured) across the Gulf of Mexico.

What we do: Stewardship of bird nesting islands in Texas 🐦🪺 Baby shorebird season is almost over. Our partners in Texas made the most of this year's season, helping protect and monitor 20 coastal bird nesting sites around Corpus Christi, Texas. Volunteers working with the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program installed signs around key bird nesting sites, letting the public know what they can do to keep breeding and nesting grounds safe. Huge thanks to Valero for making this project possible through our Gulf Star Program. Photos by Justin Leclaire, CBBEP
