Nobody will remember: - your salary - how “busy” you were - how many hours you worked People will remember: - how much you loved the Gulf of Mexico - the great things you did to protect that precious resource - that one time you forgot your sunscreen and got burnt redder than a lobster at Red Lobster

What we do: Are species moving north? Yes! Some species of Gulf of Mexico wildlife and even plants like mangroves are expanding their ranges north, a process known as tropicalization. And as a key player in fostering communication about all things Gulf, we are ready to talk about it. Our teams are hosting monthly webinars from September to April so that experts in Gulf of Mexico science and management can learn, brainstorm, and plan for potential future challenges. Another fine example of how we bring people together to talk about issues that cross state lines and impact us all. #GulfofMexico #tropicalization #mangroves

PROJECT GRANT AWARDS FOR PUBLIC MARINA PARTICIPATION The Gulf of Mexico Alliance (GOMA) has issued a Request for Applications (RFA # 122438) for local political subdivisions located in coastal counties / parishes within the 5 U.S. Gulf States of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas to complete the certification process for their marina or harbor to become a Clean and Resilient Marina. The Clean and Resilient Marina Program is a voluntary, incentive-based program that promotes environmentally responsible and resilient operations and best management practices. Harbors and marinas along the Gulf of Mexico are directly exposed to storms, flooding, land loss, and other coastal hazards. Being resilient means being able to prevent loss of life and personal injury, reduce property damage, and resume normal business activities as soon as possible after a storm. The goal is to significantly enhance the environmental and economic health of the Gulf of Mexico by increasing participation in the program via the potential incentive to receive a project specific cost reimbursement grant award (approximately $40,000 per award). PERTINENT DATES Deadline for project application submission = September 20th, 2024 Anticipated project start date = December 1st, 2024 Project duration = May not extend past November 30th, 2025 AWARD DETAILS Grant award agreements and payments will come directly from the Gulf of Mexico Alliance. Available funding for projects selected from this RFA is approximately $40,000, so project applications should not exceed this value. Minimum award value is $30,000 and applications for less than this amount will not be considered. Although project costs cannot include already-incurred costs, projects may include funding for continuation or expansion of existing projects. Cost sharing or matching is not required. This will be a cost-reimbursement grant award. Approximately 5 awards are anticipated from this RFA. Supporting Students: Inspiring the Next Generation of Ocean Guardians! 🌊 As school bells ring 🔔 and classrooms fill with eager minds, we’re thrilled to spotlight an incredible project that’s blossoming in Louisiana. The École Pointe-au-Chien French immersion school is on a mission to become a NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Ocean Guardian School, and we’re honored to support them! These young environmentalists are planting cypress trees and diving deep into the wonders of the Gulf of Mexico. 🌱🌊 Check out this inspiring video from the students, showcasing their passion and dedication to protecting our precious coastal ecosystems. Huge thanks to Hess Corporation for making this project possible through our Gulf Star Program. Let’s cheer on these future guardians of the Gulf! 🎉 #GulfofMexico #SchoolHeroes #FrenchImmersion #OceanGuardians #CypressTreeProject #InspireTheFuture NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries

20 years of GOMA: A Gulf Star is born In 2016, the Gulf Star Program was launched. This unique public-private partnership provides funding for projects supporting healthy beaches, clean waters, productive ecosystems, and thriving coastal communities in the Gulf of Mexico region. All projects in the Gulf Star Program accomplish actions identified by the Alliance’s Priority Issue Teams and Cross-Team Initiatives in the Governors’ Action Plan for Healthy and Resilient Coasts. Since its inception, Gulf Star has supported more than 83 projects for a total in $5.8 million in funding. To learn more about becoming a Gulf Star partner, contact Becky Ginn, GOMA Development Director Becky.Ginn@gomxa.org.

🫶 What We Do: Support Enhanced Monitoring of Hypoxia When most people think of the Gulf of Mexico dead zone, they think of areas off the coast of Louisiana west of the Mississippi River. But this year, researchers in Louisiana were able to study the impacts of hypoxia in areas east of the Mississippi too. Results show a 1,634 square mile hypoxic zone off Mississippi and Alabama. Knowing when and where coastal dead zones occur helps coastal policymakers, commercial and recreational fishers, and tourism officials prep for impacts and plan for the future. 🌊🎣🏖️ We were able to support this project thanks to the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration with funding provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. #ScienceResearch #GulfOfMexico #EnvironmentalScience #ResearchUpdate #PublicOutreach

What we do: Partner 🤝 with communities to improve resilience Our Coastal Community Resilience Team, in partnership with the City of Corpus Christi, Harte Research Institute, and Halff, recently facilitated a Coastal Community Resilience Index (CRI) workshop with Corpus Christi, Texas. Over 20 participants including city planning, public works, coastal and emergency management, local utilities, business, industry, and regional planning discussed community successes and identified vulnerabilities. In an innovative approach to enhance these resilience discussions, the project team used the Geospatial Resilient Economic Development (GeoRED) mapping tool during the workshop to help participants visualize risks to critical infrastructure, government buildings, and roads. This was the first workshop paring the CRI and GeoRED tools. Participants also outlined areas for future action in the short- and long-term such as work with local businesses, staff training, planning, and upgrades to city infrastructure. In the next phase of this project, the community will implement a resilience project selected by the city. This project is funded by Gulf Star partner CITGO. #GoodfortheGulf #GulfofMexico
