Our partner in Ethiopia, TaYA, spoke with young people about their experiences with stigma around pregnancy and abortion. Their stories matter. Stigma can prevent people from seeking support from family and friends, as well as from seeking essential health services. It can also fuel misinformation. Thanks to the storytellers and friends at TaYA for advocating for more supportive, inclusive environments for young people to talk about sexual and reproductive health.

"Tragically, there are instances where women, driven by misinformation or pressured pregnancies, resort to suicide, leading to the loss of precious lives. Despite the discomfort surrounding such cases, they persist in our society, highlighting the crucial link with sexual and reproductive health. In my past, discussing this topic felt uneasy, sticking to societal norms, until a pivotal event changed my perspective. During my high school years, my closest friend faced overwhelming stress but kept her difficulties hidden. Hesitant to share due to my previously expressed narrow views on sexual and reproductive health, she finally committed suicide.  This damaging experience with someone so close strongly changed me. It points up the urgent need for open discussions about sexual and reproductive health. The sacrifice of a human life provoked a transformation in my attitude, and now, without any shame, I advocate for these crucial discussions. I emphasize the importance of safe abortion, raise awareness about natural and artificial contraceptive methods, and strongly explanation for collective efforts to prevent women from resorting to such dangerous measures." #Testimony of a #youthadvocate #Stopthejudgment #Testimony #youthvoice Guttmacher Institute MSI Reproductive Choices

It’s been 40 years since the #GlobalGagRule was first imposed. This harmful US policy disrupts vital reproductive health care services and advocacy efforts, perpetuating harm to communities in low- and middle-income countries. Undoing the gag rule’s harm will take years. We need continued momentum to end this policy and begin to repair its damage to SRHR globally. Congress must take action by passing the Global HER Act, which would repeal the rule permanently. Our research in collaboration with partners in Ethiopia and Uganda sheds light on the policy’s lingering impact on reproductive health care systems and outcomes. Read more, including why it's so important to end the gag rule now: https://gu.tt/4dfaYeT #EndGlobalGag #EndGGR

Last week, Guttmacher’s global policy team was delighted to lead a learning session ahead of the #SRHR4ALL National Dialogue hosted by Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights, happening this week in the Philippines. We were grateful for this opportunity to engage with participants on the Guttmacher-Lancet Commission’s integrated definition of sexual & reproductive health & rights (SRHR), and how the full realization of SRHR for all encompasses a broad spectrum of SRH services and rights – including often neglected issues such as safe abortion, comprehensive sex education, infertility, LGBTQI+ rights and others. Our experts work to equip advocates with evidence and data to make the case for a comprehensive approach to SRHR – toward a world in which everyone can access the resources they need to achieve sexual & reproductive health and well-being. We appreciate being able to engage with SRHR activists and policymakers to learn more about the contexts they work in and what comprehensive SRHR means to them. We look forward to continuing this work!

More than 120 million people worldwide are displaced by persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations — and we know that displacement does not stop the need for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care. Contraceptive supplies and services, care for survivors of sexual violence, prevention of and treatment for HIV/STIs, maternal and newborn care, and safe abortion care must be available and accessible in humanitarian crisis settings. Timely care can save lives, and prevent disease and disability related to unintended pregnancy, obstetric complications, sexual and gender-based violence, STIs and a range of reproductive disorders. We’re grateful for humanitarian workers and for our partners in the Inter-Agency Working Group on Reproductive Health in Crises who have championed the Minimum Initial Service Package for SRH in crisis situations: https://gu.tt/46TrYVo #WorldHumanitarianDay #WHD2024 #ActForHumanity

Pregnancy and abortion are universal experiences, and yet, each story is unique. Thanks to the storytellers and TaYA for sharing these stories and uplifting the voices of young people.

“I reside in the capital city of Ethiopia- Addis Ababa, and I am an individual who holds reservations about abortion and tends to pass negative judgments on those who choose to undergo the procedure. However, a recent experience involving a former classmate’s situation has compelled me to reconsider my perspective. During a visit to her, we discovered that she had disappeared from her home, discontinued her education, and changed her residence due to an undisclosed illness. Upon further investigation, we learned from her sister that she had left her village for a rural area after becoming pregnant. Fearing societal judgment and family disapproval, she resorted to a traditional abortion method, leading to severe complications and significant blood loss. Her mental and psychological well-being deteriorated, and after some recovery, she sought employment in Arab countries. This revelation prompted my friends and me to reach out to her through various means, offering support and encouragement. It became evident that she had faced criticism from some students who questioned why she hadn't used contraception. This experience underscored the importance of empathizing with women who undergo abortion, as we may not fully comprehend the challenges they endure and the reasons behind their decisions. Rather than assigning blame, our focus should be on supporting these women. By fostering a non-judgmental environment, we can encourage them to seek safe abortion care in hospitals, preserving their lives and promoting mental and psychological stability. It is crucial to recognize the complexities surrounding abortion and extend understanding and support to those who navigate these difficult situations.” #Stopthejudgment #Testimony #youthvoice Guttmacher Institute

#SRH researchers: Join this online seminar where one of our experts, Ann Moore, will discuss the varied processes by which people come to know they are pregnant. Pregnancy recognition trajectories can be complex, shaped by individual, interpersonal, community and structural factors. Research on these trajectories is key to understanding people’s ability to make pregnancy-related decisions. Register here: https://lnkd.in/d_Jihrqm
