On Monday, the US Supreme Court once again refused to say that the federal Emergency Medical Treatment & Labor Act (EMTALA) requires emergency abortion care nationwide, regardless of state abortion policy. This decision will not change the status quo in Texas where the state's total ban forces patients to cross state lines for abortion care. Our Monthly Abortion Provision Study found that in 2023, over 34,000 Texans traveled out of state for care. Destiny Lopez, our Acting Co-CEO, said it best: "The anti-abortion movement would rather let pregnant people suffer life-threatening health consequences than allow them to receive stabilizing abortion care." Texans and abortion patients everywhere deserve better. SCOTUS must step up and affirm that EMTALA protects all pregnant people in emergency situations, no matter what. Georgia’s 6-week ban was reinstated yesterday afternoon following a ruling from the state Supreme Court, just a week after the ban was blocked by a lower court. Our interactive map is up to date with Georgia moving from “Restrictive” to “Very Restrictive.” Reinstating this ban is a devastating violation of Georgians’ reproductive autonomy. This ban—like all abortion bans—is inhumane. Everyone should be able to access abortion in their community. The 6-week ban will remain in effect indefinitely as an appeal of the lower court’s decision makes its way through the state Supreme Court. We will monitor and share updates if anything changes. Public health metrics around contraception should focus on measuring whether the needs of individuals are being met. But that’s not always the case, as found in a new study led by Dr. Anu Manchikanti Gómez of University of California, Berkeley and co-authored by Guttmacher’s Megan Kavanaugh. Every decade, the US government’s Healthy People initiative outlines public health goals for the country. Its latest iteration, Healthy People 2030, includes goals related to contraception—specifically, increasing the use of effective birth control. The study highlights shortcomings of the initiative’s current metric that solely focuses on contraceptive effectiveness, rather than a person-centered one that takes individuals’ birth control preferences into account. By doing so, the Healthy People metric misses the contraceptive needs of millions of people by simultaneously including content non-users of contraception, and excluding those who are using or want to use contraception who have never had sex. Highlighting the differences between current and person-centered approaches to contraceptive access is critical for future advocacy and policy efforts. Last week, we hosted a virtual advocacy day with policy and research experts from Guttmacher, Ibis Reproductive Health and ANSIRH. These experts met with US Congressional staff to share their expertise and latest work to advance reproductive health and rights. Throughout the day, 40 experts held about 50 meetings with Congressional staffers. These dynamic conversations emphasized the importance of using evidence to shape strong reproductive health policy. Experts discussed the SRHR needs of people globally, the harm of the Dobbs decision and medically unnecessary restrictions, the importance of investing in international family planning and how research can help to expand access to abortion and contraceptive care. It's vital that US policymakers rely on the substantial body of reproductive health research when speaking publicly and developing policy agendas. We hope this advocacy day begins ongoing conversations about the role of evidence-based research in creating informed and equitable policies! #ReproductiveHealth #Contraception #AbortionAccess

❓Did you know that 8.5 million people worldwide have access to modern contraception methods thanks to the Dutch government's investment in development cooperation?   This is evident from a new report by the Guttmacher Institute detailing the impact of planned cuts by the Dutch government of the official development assistance (ODA) budget.   To learn more about the report, join us online this afternoon at the launch of the Multiparty Initiative on Global Health & sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Elizabeth Sully, from the Guttmacher Institute, will be discussing the report’s critical findings. Check out the livestream 🎥  ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ek_diENi   #NLforHealth #DutchGlobalHealthAlliance #GlobalHealth #SRHR

Immigrants in the US are more likely to encounter knowledge and financial barriers to abortion access than US-born patients, according to findings from Guttmacher researcher Alice Cartwright and colleagues. Collected prior to the Dobbs decision, these data highlight the ongoing challenges that immigrants face when seeking care, especially with abortion banned in 13 states and severely restricted in several others. Everyone, no matter where they are from, deserves access to the full spectrum of reproductive health care—including abortion care and coverage. Our new fact sheet outlines seven key ways #Project2025 threatens sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Authored by the Heritage Foundation, this far-reaching agenda aims to reverse civil and human rights and implement extremist conservative policies across federal agencies. It would also specifically target access to abortion and contraception, and seek to undermine reproductive health globally. Learn more about these threats to SRHR and how they would affect reproductive autonomy for people worldwide: https://gu.tt/4drtWOq #SRHR #ReproductiveHealth #ReproductiveRights
