In recognition of Archtober, New York City’s annual monthlong celebration of architecture, we spoke to the architects in our NYC office about the most meaningful and definitive projects of their careers at H2M thus far. For H2M’s NYC Office Director Robert Ikes, RA, LEED AP, NYSCEO, NCIDQ, a new Hilton Garden Inn on the campus of Stony Brook University represented challenging new opportunities to grow as a professional. “The Stony Brook Hotel was, by far, the biggest project I had worked on at the time. Going from designing small interior office and retail conversions and low-rise commercial buildings to a 5-story, 135-key hotel was an exciting and nerve-racking stretch for me as an architect,” said Ikes, who also serves as Vice President and Deputy Discipline Director of Private Sector Architecture. In addition to the guest rooms, the 89,000-square-foot property also features a welcome pavilion and lobby, cocktail bar and dining areas, rooms for private events, a fitness center, business center, meeting rooms, an indoor spa, a swimming pool, and outdoor patios. The design deviates from Hilton’s prototypical Garden Inn because of its location on the Stony Brook campus and the University’s requirement that new buildings resemble the architectural character of other campus buildings. H2M’s design team developed a design that both satisfies University criteria while integrating the iconic brand features of a Hilton Garden Inn. The resulting aesthetic is an articulately detailed combination of red and white brick with architectural cast stone banding and cornice work that makes up the façade to match the University’s material palette. “We had to come up with a design that respected the Hilton brand while also adhering to university criteria,” explained Ikes. “Projects that require the marriage of various aesthetic sensibilities can be challenging, but here we were given the latitude to come up with creative solutions that addressed those issues. That’s where we thrive as architects.” H2M provided a full team approach on the Stony Brook Hotel by also including interior design, landscape architecture, and mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, and civil engineering. Since its grand opening in 2013, the Stony Brook Hotel has hosted hundreds of prospective students and their parents, visiting scholars, alumni, athletic teams, and more. “I am thrilled with what we accomplished here, and grateful that I was given the opportunity to design something that now so many people are able to enjoy. I take great pride in seeing my ideas on paper transform into structures that contribute to our built environment. Projects like these are why I love being an architect.”

Hamilton Stage Flood Mitigation- City of Rahway, New Jersey As Hurricane Ida struck the Atlantic Coast in 2021, the City of Rahway, NJ, faced immense flooding. The storm's severity caused a branch of the Rahway River to overflow, and the topography of the area created the perfect conditions for riverine flooding—a form of flooding that can occur when river channels become blocked or inundated with storm water. Depending on the nearby terrain, velocity of the moving water, and potential for uprooting trees and other debris, riverine flooding can be catastrophic. Several surrounding community facilities were impacted, including the Hamilton Stage at Union County Performing Arts Center. Filled with floodwater, the lively building suffered interior damages and became host to toxic mold growth. To help prevent future damage, the City of Rahway selected H2M to recommend new flood mitigation measures. The suggested mitigation methods incorporate dry flood-proofing technology capable of insulating a structure such that no more than four inches of water can enter within a 24-hour period. These measures include doors and gates that are activated by rising flood waters to create an automatic waterproof seal without any human intervention required. It is vital for public and private property owners alike to understand the flood risks that may come with proximity to a river. With proper mitigation measures in place, river-adjacent communities can experience peace of mind knowing they are prepared to handle future flood scenarios.

In recognition of Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, we are bringing attention to the permitted lead in drinking water concentrations, which are lower than ever. Will your school comply with the December 2025 deadline? The New York State Department of Health requires lead testing for all fixtures that could be used for drinking or cooking, such as sinks and water fountains. Last year, the State reduced the maximum permitted lead concentrations down from 15 parts per billion (ppb) to only 5ppb. If testing reveals concentrations exceeding 5ppb, schools are required to take action. We are now in the middle of a compliance testing period which ends December 31, 2025. Now is the time to find out if your school will pass the test! H2M’s team of environmental investigators and education specialists are available to discuss concerns and develop a plan to protect your school.
