✨ Celebrating Todos Santos Across Cultures! ✨ As we step into November, let's take a moment to celebrate Todos Santos (All Saints' Day), a tradition that resonates deeply across various cultures and countries. This beautiful day of remembrance and honor gives us a chance to reflect on the lives of those who have passed and celebrate their memories in unique and heartwarming ways. Below are just a few examples of how our countries celebrate and honor those who have passed away. Mexico: Known as "Día de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead), the celebrations span from October 31st to November 2nd. Families create colorful altars adorned with marigolds, candles, and photographs of their loved ones. They prepare favorite foods and sweets, such as pan de muerto, to welcome the spirits back for a joyous reunion. Bolivia: In Bolivia, Todos Santos is a deeply spiritual event, in which indigenous traditions and catholic beliefs combine, families build "mesas" (altars) with offerings of food, drinks, and favorite items of the deceased. These altars often include "t'antawawas," a type of bread shaped like babies, to symbolize the return of the souls. Families also visit cemeteries to decorate graves and share meals in honor of their loved ones. Guatemala: Guatemalans celebrate with unique traditions such as the construction of giant kites, particularly in the towns of Santiago Sacatepéquez and Sumpango. These kites are flown to connect with the spirits of the deceased. Additionally, families visit cemeteries to clean and adorn graves with flowers, and they prepare special dishes like fiambre, a cold salad made with various meats and vegetables. Ecuador: In Ecuador, the celebration of Todos Santos is marked by the preparation of traditional foods like colada morada (a spiced fruit drink) and guaguas de pan (bread shaped like children). Families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves, often bringing these foods to share in a communal meal, symbolizing the connection between the living and the dead. Puerto Rico: In Puerto Rico, Todos Santos is a day of solemn remembrance and community. Families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves with flowers and candles, and they often hold masses in honor of their deceased loved ones. Traditional foods such as arroz con gandules, pernil, and pasteles are prepared and shared among family members, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and deep familial bonds. Thank you to our members Dawn Cordero and Ligia McEvoy for sharing pictures of how they honored their loved ones. Do you celebrate Todos Santos or Dia de los Muertos?
