Thank you, Nephrologist Dr. Karol Rosner, for speaking at the Hannibal Regional Auxiliary's October Luncheon. Dr. Rosner discussed the importance of kidney health and shared insights into the various conditions nephrologists diagnose and treat. He also took time to answer a variety of questions concerning kidney health and signed a children's book to be given to the Hannibal Children's Center. Nephrologists play a crucial role in diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic kidney problems and diseases. Kidneys are vital because they filter waste and toxins from the blood, maintaining a balance of water, acid-base, and minerals in the body. If you would like to schedule and appointment with Dr. Rosner, please call 573-629-3500.

About us
The Hannibal Regional Healthcare System (HRHS) story began when community benefactors and leaders formed Hannibal’s first hospitals - Levering Hospital in 1903 and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in 1914. The merger of these two organizations in the late 1980s led to another major milestone in the evolution of strong community-based healthcare. In 1993 the new Hannibal Regional Hospital opened its doors on a pastoral 105-acre setting which is now a thriving healthcare campus. The beautifully appointed medical campus currently includes Hannibal Regional Hospital, Hannibal Regional Medical Group, Hannibal Regional Foundation, and the James E. Cary Cancer Center. The Hannibal Regional Healthcare System team is nearly 1,000 strong and is mission-driven, values-based and committed to preserving the vision and legacy of our founders. Our team takes pride in continuing to create and strengthen access to community-based, contemporary healthcare resources for patients, families, and the communities we serve.

Diabetes impacts 37.3 million people in the United States, with 8.5 million of those individuals unaware that they have the condition. We are thrilled to announce a major milestone in Hannibal Regional’s journey to bring radiation oncology cancer care to the Kirksville area. Today we received Certificate of Need approval by the State of Missouri Healthcare Facilities Review Committee for the purchase of a new linear accelerator in Kirksville! This is a huge step forward in creating a new cancer center and bringing radiation oncology treatment to cancer patients in this region. For two and a half years residents in the Kirksville area have had to travel 90 miles or more, each way, every day for the duration of their treatments to receive this life-saving care. Hannibal Regional’s commitment to bringing radiation oncology care back to Kirksville has never been stronger, and today’s CON approval is the next step in making this new cancer center a reality. Thanks to everyone who has been a part of this approval process and are helping us provide quality care in all of our communities!

Janelle Dolbeare of Barry, Illinois, is always on the go. As a mother and foster mom, she fully embraces her busy lifestyle. Despite juggling numerous appointments for her kids, one appointment she never misses is her annual OBGYN visit and mammogram. In March 2024, Janelle attended her regular OBGYN appointment with Dr. John Bennett at Hannibal Regional Medical Group, followed by a routine mammogram. The next day, Radiology Nurse Navigator Keegan Harvey called with troubling news: an area of concern had been detected, so Janelle needed to return for a repeat scan. Life was hectic, and Janelle almost canceled the follow-up, but she decided she better not put it off. After the second mammogram, she received immediate results. Keegan informed her that a biopsy was recommended for further evaluation. The following day, the biopsy was completed, and Janelle was told the spot was cancerous. She was promptly scheduled to meet with surgeon Dr. Stacey Copeland. Janelle recalls, "I was impressed by how quickly Radiology moved to get answers. It felt like they didn’t want to waste any time. Within just one week, I had two mammograms, a biopsy, a diagnosis, and a meeting with Dr. Copeland." Due to her relatively young age of 46, Dr. Copeland ordered several genetic tests. The results revealed that Janelle’s cancer was ductal carcinoma, which was fortunately caught at a very early stage. Dr. Copeland performed a lumpectomy to remove the cancerous tissue. Janelle then underwent four weeks of daily radiation therapy. Thanks to the early detection, she did not need chemotherapy but was prescribed a hormone-suppressing pill. Reflecting on her journey, Janelle shares, "Everyone I encountered was so kind and caring, especially Dr. Bennett. When I was waiting for my second mammogram, he came into the waiting room and gave me a big hug. It was so comforting and thoughtful. He reassured me that we would get through this together. I encourage everyone to stay up to date on their screenings and annual visits. I had no idea I had cancer, there was no lump or symptoms. If I hadn’t gone in for my routine mammogram, I wouldn’t have discovered it until it was much worse." Early detection is vital in the fight against breast cancer, and Hannibal Regional is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to deliver fast, accurate diagnoses. As a designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center by the American College of Radiology, Hannibal Regional offers patients personalized care from a dedicated team of specialists. In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Hannibal Regional Radiology is offering 3D mammograms for a special price of $99 throughout October. For more information about women’s health screenings or to schedule your mammogram, call 573-248-1300.

A breast cancer diagnosis can be shocking and scary. Many patients and their families feel overwhelmed during the diagnosis process, but having someone to guide patients through their journey can make all the difference. At Hannibal Regional, we recognize the importance of support and guidance, which is why we have a dedicated radiology nurse navigator on-site to assist patients every step of the way. The complexity of breast cancer care often involves multiple physicians and caregivers. Nurse navigators act as the glue that brings all these pieces together, ensuring that patients receive seamless and compassionate care. The Radiology Nurse Navigator attends appointments with patients including biopsies, further imaging, and surgeries. Patients benefit from having a familiar face at these procedures to help make them feel more comfortable. Often, the Nurse Navigator will take notes for the patient at appointments, as some information can be overwhelming. They then are able to discuss notes, questions, medications, and any fears they may have with the Nurse Navigator. Radiology Nurse Navigator, Keegan Harvey, works closely with patients going through a breast cancer journey. Keegan shares, “Every patient is different and has different needs, but one thing all patients need is to know they have someone in their corner to help take care of them. I never want a patient to leave feeling they are not important or what they are going through is unnoticed. I am here to be their advocate, friend, and supporter through their journey.” When a patient chooses Hannibal Regional Hospital for breast screenings, they are receiving individualized care from a team of award-winning specialists. Hannibal Regional Hospital is proudly recognized by the American College of Radiology as a Designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center. Using a variety of state-of-the-art imaging technology, Hannibal Regional Hospital provides a comprehensive diagnostic Women's Imaging department that offers rapid response to the needs of patients. With early detection being a key component to a positive outcome in breast cancer, Hannibal Regional is offering a special $99 price on 3D mammograms during the month of October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To schedule your 3D mammogram, please call 573- 248-5688.
