Harborview is the only level I adult and pediatric trauma and burn center for Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

About us

In 1877, Harborview was founded as the six-bed King County Hospital in South Seattle. In 1931, it moved to its present location overlooking Puget Sound and its name was changed to Harborview Hospital, now known as Harborview Medical Center. UW Medicine’s management of Harborview has enabled the hospital to become a leading academic medical center, and new facilities have been added with support from voter-approved bond projects and Harborview reserve funds. The Norm Maleng Building opened in 2008 and the Ninth & Jefferson Building opened in 2009.

“My night time nurse, Luis, greatly improved my experience. He always made sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. He was there for me all three nights I stayed and would bring me heating pads for my stomach before I could even ask for them. My experience at Harborview was great.” -5E patient 📸: Luis Moreno Nunez, BSN, RN

We recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of Harborview Medical Center's Regional Burn Center. Harborview was one of the first hospitals to treat burn injuries with early excision, the surgical removal of dead tissue and skin grafting within days after injury. This approach helped patients survive and recover more quickly from serious burns and established Harborview Medical Center as the regional burn center for patients in Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. From its earliest days, the burn center has also been a leader in education and research. Our fellowship program has trained many of the top burn specialists in the world and continues to be one of the most coveted fellowships programs. Today, Dr. Tam Pham, chief of burn surgery, leads more than 300 specialized providers who deliver comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care at Harborview. They include general surgeons, plastic surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, specialized nursing staff, psychologists, vocational rehabilitation therapists, dietitians, pharmacists and pediatricians. Congratulations to the entire burn center team on this historic milestone for Harborview and our region.
