Whether it’s because of a busy schedule, feeling overwhelmed at work or the stress of everyday life, everyone’s looking for ways to relax these days. Even in small doses, reading is shown to reduce stress, improve sleep and build empathy, explains Andrea Ball, MLS, MultiCare’s research and education librarian. When reading, you’re focusing on a task, which allows your other thoughts to take a backseat. Once you get through the initial difficulty of sitting down and shifting into that mindset, reading can be a calming experience.
About us
MultiCare is a not-for-profit health care system with roots that go back well over 100 years since the founding of Tacoma’s first hospital. Today, we are the largest community-based, locally governed health system in the state of Washington with more than 20,000 employees including employees, providers, and volunteers. We are a very different organization than we were just a few years ago — larger, more diverse, embracing the changes that come our way as health care continues to evolve. But our commitment to our mission — partnering for healing and a healthy future — and our dedication to the health of the many communities we serve remains constant and unwavering. Our core values of Respect, Integrity, Stewardship, Excellence, Collaboration and Kindness, serve as our guiding principles and impact every aspect of our organization, including how we provide patient care and what we expect from each other. MultiCare is also proud of our commitment to workforce diversity and culturally competent care. This commitment is led by our CEO and supported through employee education and community outreach.

This spring, juniors and seniors from University High School and juniors from Spokane Valley Tech worked through five hands-on stations, including CPR training, “Stop the Bleed” training and emergency triage, an operating room simulation, a step-by-step vitals review, and behind-the-scenes tour of the hospital. Career Day is an easy and informative way to show students the many different routes and educational pathways available in the field, such as beginning as a volunteer or COPE Health Scholar; joining the facilities, IT or kitchen teams; or pursuing education to become a nurse or provider.

At 17, Nathan Eller was a competitive athlete who dreamed of running Division I track in college. But during his junior year of high school, Nathan was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma, a rare cancer, and received treatment at MultiCare Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. The experience later inspired him to pursue a career in diagnostic ultrasound — and led him right back to the place and health system that helped him heal. “When I found out I was coming back to Tacoma for my clinical internship, I was over the moon,” Nathan says. “It was amazing to think that my experience was coming full circle.”

Please join us in congratulating Daniel Keene, a registered nurse at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital’s neuro trauma intensive care unit and founder of the nonprofit The Valhalla Flag Project, who was awarded a Health Care Hero award from the Puget Sound Business Journal. "I want my legacy to be that I took care of my brothers-in-arms, that I continued my responsibilities as “doc” and made sure every veteran is given the opportunity to have a final salute. In combat I helped patch them up and get them home. Now, when they pass in the hospital, I want to make sure they do so with dignity and respect."

M.A.S.H. Camp is unlike many summer programs in that it is free to attend. While program admission is competitive, it aims to reach students who may have something to contribute to the field. “We’re looking for the students who are interested in science and math and engineering, and we’re looking for students who don’t have a 4.0 that we might be able to encourage. You never know who is interested in this career field, so we’re looking for various backgrounds.”
