HAS HEART

In 2012, our first ArtPrize entry was a grassroots experiment partnering 5 wounded military #veterans with 5 #graphicdesigners hosted inside an abandoned storefront. Fast forward to our 12th annual #ArtPrize exhibit and our first in our OWN SPACE at the HAS HEART Coffee Shop; we're proud to bring you the "2nd Best Cup of Coffee in The World." This single cup and the designs featured behind it represent over a decade of veterans and designers collaborating and sharing their stories through art and design. This cup represents the community we've forged, which has come together to support and uplift one another. This cup represents the future projects, cultural impact, and meaningful conversations we'll host between veterans and civilians of all backgrounds and experiences. Last night in Lansing, our co-founders Michael Hyacinthe and Tyler Way were honored to accept the MVAA Education Innovator award from the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency for their work with #veteran entrepreneurs through the GVSU MVE-Lab (Michigan Veteran Entrepreneur Lab) at Grand Valley State University. We continue to pursue ways to support #veterans through creativity, innovation, and education, including building #vet-owned businesses alongside a partnership with the Seidman College of Business and Warrior Rising.

This morning I had coffee with Stephanie Ford at one of the most incredible, intentionally-designed spaces I've recently experienced: HAS HEART in Veterans Memorial Park. Given the story of how the coffee shop came to be, I was already fairly excited about finally dropping by (it's been open for about a half year now). But I can honestly say that the space exceeded whatever expectations I may have had. If you're in downtown Grand Rapids and need a morning pick me up - and perhaps a fascinating conversation or two - consider a visit. I popped over to HasHeart Coffee Shop today on my lunch. What a neat spot! Their mission is to unite US military veterans with artists to help uplift, benefit, and inspire our war heroes. They use various art mediums to tell veteran’s stories.
