  • September marks Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, highlighting a critical issue in Deschutes County where, from 2000 to 2020, 58% of deaths among youth aged 10-17 were due to suicide. This alarming statistic stands in stark contrast to the state average of 29% and the national average of 19%, indicating a significant concern for local youth. Notably, 57% of these tragic losses involved firearms. The High Desert ESD acknowledges the urgent need for initiatives in Deschutes County aimed at supporting our young people and fostering their long-term well-being. Our safety team is dedicated to providing services in the region including: - Safe storage materials including gun locks, safes, and ammo boxes free of charge to youth and their families - Medication and sharps lock boxes free of charge to youth and their families - Student Threat Assessment, Student Sexual Incident Response Teams - Suicide and Bullying Prevention NeighborImpact Child Care Resources We encourage youth to report any suicide concerns using Safe Oregon and First Step apps and to access helpful resources like YouthLine, 988, and Deschutes County Crisis Lines. If you have any questions or resources, contact Ashley Davenport, school safety & prevention specialist at 541.316.0156

They participated in numerous workshops, presentations, meetings, and a technology expo, providing them with essential knowledge on how to better support our students. This experience also allowed them to build a national network, enhancing our ability to empower DHH students to become strong advocates. • Meet Marlene Gonzalez, Juntos Aprendemos program manager What inspired you to apply for the Juntos Aprendemos manager position? My decision to apply for the Juntos Aprendemos (JA) manager position was not only influenced by a friend, but also by my unique blend of passion for community service and demonstrated commitment through my tenure at ESDs. This blend, coupled with my captivation by ESDs’ innovative and creative solutions, makes me a strong candidate for the manager position. I was elated at the opportunity to extend this service to the Latin community and nurture early literacy when I learned about the role. What were you doing before you accepted this new position, and how did it prepare you for the JA manager role? Before accepting this new position... more at https://ow.ly/7FTR50SfHIE

  • Meet Kim Young, HDESD substitute teacher What inspired you to become a substitute teacher? Transition times and a desire to contribute to the community. After graduating from the Master of Arts teaching program at Oregon State University in Corvallis, I moved to Bend and chose to work as a substitute for one year, allowing time to get to know the local schools, and work at different locations. Being a substitute offered the opportunity to explore a wide variety of roles and grade levels, and to see things from many perspectives. My first substitute experience led to a full-time position for 15 years as a... https://ow.ly/cqEC50RYZTr
