Barrister specialising in Safeguarding (UK and International). Director of Safeguarding Fundamentals. Director of A Noble - DSLS Together & Chair of Trustees (SAND MAT)
Addressing the Spike in Domestic Abuse During Holidays and Sporting Events The holidays, a time many look forward to, can unfortunately see an increase in domestic abuse cases, particularly involving children. The NSPCC reported a significant rise in domestic abuse contacts from July to September 2023. Alarmingly, emotional abuse was a major concern, with 1,422 contacts mentioning it, peaking in June with 190 contacts. In fact, 32% of these instances occurred between June and August. Barnardo's has highlighted another pressing issue: during school holidays, many children experiencing sexual and criminal exploitation become "invisible" to professionals. The absence of the daily support structure that schools provide places these vulnerable children at even greater risk. We also see a disturbing rise in incidents during and especially after major sporting events. This pattern of increased risk requires our attention and action. As we approach the summer holidays and major sporting events such as the Olympics, DSLS TOGETHER is uploading content specifically designed for school Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLS). This content aims to help DSLS update staff about the issue, ensuring they are well-informed and prepared. Join DSLS TOGETHER for exclusive content designed to make their jobs less stressful. The content was provided (and with HUGE thanks) to Hollie Gazzard Trust Their programme of training and other resources are phenomenal - give them a call … If you notice signs of abuse, report them. Together, we can make a difference and protect those most vulnerable. As a society, we need to prioritize the safety and well-being of children, especially when it comes to the serious and sensitive topic of child sexual abuse. Prevention is key, and it starts with being aware of the signs that may indicate child sexual abuse and taking steps towards prevention. Some signs of child sexual abuse include sudden changes in behavior, displaying knowledge or engaging in sexual behaviors that are not age-appropriate, physical symptoms such as unexplained injuries or discomfort, emotional distress, sleep disturbances, avoidance or fear. We can prevent child sexual abuse by educating children about body boundaries, appropriate and inappropriate touch, and encouraging open communication. Empowering children by teaching them about personal rights, self-confidence, and the importance of saying "no" when they feel uncomfortable is crucial. Vigilance is also important; we need to monitor the people who have access to our children, supervise their activities and interactions, and report any signs of child sexual abuse immediately to the appropriate authorities or child protection agencies. Creating a safe environment where children feel protected and supported is essential. If you suspect child sexual abuse, seek professional help from organizations specializing in child protection. Action Family Network delivers bespoke and specialist safeguarding training and consultations to parents, faith and community leaders, churches, and clubs. We are happy to discuss your individual needs and provide appropriate support. Let's prioritize the safety and well-being of our children together. #actionfamilynetwork #safeguarding #childsexualabuse #parenting

No child or youth should ever have to deal with the traumatizing and lifelong impacts of sexual violence. Abuse of any kind – but especially sexual abuse – is unacceptable and even more reprehensible when it targets children and youth, and we will not stand for it. Alberta’s government is providing $5 million for Little Warriors over the next three years to ensure more children can access trauma-informed, evidence-based treatment programs. Through this investment, more young survivors will be able to address their mental, emotional, and physical well-being so they can heal and thrive. Keeping children safe is everyone’s responsibility. If you see something that worries you, report your concerns by calling the child intervention provincial intake line at 1-800-638-0715.
