Black mothers face immense responsibilities and pressures while also dealing with racial and gender discrimination. In the USA, 29-44% of Black women experience postpartum depressive symptoms, including self-critical thoughts and doubting their ability to care for their child. Yet, many do not receive mental health care services for postpartum depression. Ways to nurture yourself: ✨ Join community groups with other mothers of color for support. ✨ Seek care from culturally sensitive therapists. ✨ Eat well and exercise, even if just for a few minutes daily. ✨ Be kind to yourself. Speak kind words and celebrate little wins. ✨ Write your thoughts and feelings in a journal. Remember, you are strong, resilient, and deserving of care and support. Take care of yourself.💖 #BlackMaternalHealth #PostpartumDepression #MentalHealthMatters #SupportBlackMothers #SelfCare #CommunitySupport #CelebrateYourself #YouAreStrong #Empowerment

You’re invited to “Tending To Your Melanin: Balancing Skin Health with Aesthetics” with Dr. Kiyanna Williams, MD, FAAD, FACMS, Double Board Certified Surgical and Cosmetic Dermatologist. 🗓️ Wednesday, August 7, 2024 ⏰ 7:00 PM ET Our skin is the largest and heaviest organ of our bodies, protecting our insides from the outside world. It tells us about our health and immune system, helps us regulate our body temperature, and enables us to feel sensations like touch, pressure, and pain. So taking great care of our skin is vital to our overall health and wellbeing. However, knowing exactly what to do when it comes to skincare can be confusing. There’s seemingly thousands of ingredients touted as the holy grail and so much conflicting advice. Some tried and true methods work for some people but don’t work for others, and some products may end up doing more harm than good. And in the pursuit of clear skin for those of us with more melanin, balancing healthy skin with the desire to get rid of dark spots, scarring, and hyperpigmentation can feel like an uphill battle, when all we want to do is feel good about how our skin looks. Join us on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 for a community conversation that helps us go back to the basics of caring for our skin so that it feels, looks, and is healthy, inside and out. 🔗 Registration is free – save your spot now! Rest in Peace and Power, Sonya Massey. Today, we are filled with profound sorrow and pain as we remember Sonya Massey, whose life was brutally taken by a police officer in Springfield, Illinois. Sonya was a daughter, mother of two teenagers, devout Christian, sister, cousin, and friend. She called the police for help about a possible prowler on her property and was murdered by an officer. We are heartbroken and outraged. The system continues to perpetuate violence against Black and brown people. We demand accountability and justice. We stand beside Sonya's family and loved ones, not just in grief, but in the relentless pursuit of justice for Sonya. We will keep fighting. #JusticeForSonyaMassey #SayHerName #BlackLivesMatter #EndPoliceViolence #SpringfieldIL

You’re invited to “Is Everyone Just Coping? Getting Real About How We Use Alcohol & Tobacco” with Dr. Michelle V. Soto, MD MBA FASAM, Chief of Ambulatory Care and Health Equity Officer at NYC Health + Hospitals / South Brooklyn Health. 🗓️ Wednesday, July 24, 2024 ⏰ 7:00 PM ET Since forever, people have been using alcohol and tobacco because of their perceived benefits. As social substances and coping mechanisms, they can help people loosen up in group settings, serve as a method of distraction or numbing, or even make a person think they are feeling warmer. From a health perspective, while we tend to think only about how toxic alcohol and tobacco are to the body, consuming them every once in a while is not inherently bad. It is the overuse or misuse of alcohol and tobacco that causes harm to our bodies or our lives. However, because of how culturally embedded alcohol and tobacco have been, sometimes we’re unaware of crossing the line from casual enjoyment to harmful habits. And the stigma around addiction and dependency makes many people prefer to deal with any challenges with alcohol or tobacco by themselves. This makes it harder for them to get help. Join us on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 for a community conversation where we check in with each other and ourselves about how we’re really using alcohol and tobacco and how to better understand the line between use and abuse. 🔗 Registration is free – save your spot now!
