HealthConnect One trains, connects, and mobilizes communities in service of birth equity,
About us
HealthConnect One is the national leader in advancing respectful, community-based, peer-to-peer support for pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and early parenting. Our vision is to see every baby, mother, and family thrive in a healthy community. Since 1986, HealthConnect One (HC One) has focused on collaborative work with grassroots maternal and child health and social service providers. We train community health workers, or lay health promoters, who make a personal commitment to improving the health of their own community. We assist organizations in developing programs that use the power of peer support, incorporating trained community health workers into paid positions in outreach, health education and community health advocacy programs. We also mobilize diverse stakeholders to build for policies and programs that improve maternal and child health in some of the most distressed communities in the country. By supporting and challenging lay workers to find their own voice and training them to share vital health information with others who have little access to resources, HC One helps community residents to share their skills close to home. By providing training and technical assistance to frontline community organizations, we help them tap the powerful resources that already exist in their neighborhoods. Our work involves grassroots consensus-building, and we bring that perspective into national conversations. Therefore, our work helps to strengthen and transform communities over time.

The United States of America has the worst maternal health outcomes for a developed nation, and Black women are 3-4x’s more likely to die in childbirth. We are proud of our team for presenting and attending the NIH Improve Conference. They were surrounded by other impactful maternal health workers who are working to improve maternal health for all. We are incredibly proud of the meaningful impact our team is making in maternal health! ✨
The United States of America has the worst maternal health outcomes for a developed nation, and Black women are 3-4x’s more likely to die in childbirth. Today I had the opportunity to learn about the impactful maternal health work scientists across the country are doing as apart of the NIH Improve Project, while I also presented on a research poster too. While this was a celebration of science and the impactful work we are doing, I couldn’t help but to think about the gap in representation of BW scientists in this space and that more work needs to be done to improve maternal health for all, but particularly for BW. I am so proud to be apart of the 1% of BW who go into a STEM PhD and I’m also ready to see that number rise in the future. HealthConnect One

🌟 Exciting news from HealthConnect One! 🌟 Our Senior Project Manager, Rebecca Lesperance, M.S., and CBD Manager and Trainer, Ashauna Mathews, recently engaged with leaders in black maternal and infant health at the 2024 Black Maternal Health Conference in Atlanta. Rebecca presented on “Doula READI,” emphasizing effective strategies for integrating doulas into hospital settings to ensure responsive care and equitable birthing choices. Ashauna led a session titled “The Community Heals Itself,” highlighting our peer-to-peer support model that empowers BIPOC women through education and community engagement. My first CBCF ALC was an incredible experience. We will be back and look forward to future collaboration with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and Institute for Women's Policy Research.
It was an incredible experience for HealthConnect One's President & CEO, Twylla Dillion, MBA, Ph.D. and Advocacy and Evaluation Manager Tiwani Oseni, MPH Oseni to be surrounded by inspiring Black legislators, policymakers, and advocates at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference last week! Together, we joined conversations that centered Black experiences and outcomes within policy, pushing for transformative change. We were honored to attend the Institute for Women's Policy Research’s Policy Perspectives event, and also listened in on a powerful discussion on the NIH Improve Initiative and its critical connection to the #MomnibusAct. This impactful week was full of learning and collaboration with policymakers driving forward change within Black Maternal Health. We’re excited to bring these insights back to continue the fight for healthier birthing families and communities. #BlackMaternalHealth #BirthEquity #BirthJustice #WomensPolicy

All birthing people have the right to safe, respectful, equitable maternity care. Yet the fact that millions of people of reproductive age in the U.S. live in counties without a SINGLE birthing facility or obstetric care provider is a stark reminder that for too many, this right is not realized. The new March of Dimes report highlights how lack of access to maternal health care remains a significant hurdle in the U.S., and has only worsened following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Every Mother Counts is dedicated to ensuring that all people receive safe, respectful, and equitable care—including the essential access to that care. 🔗 Find the report: https://bit.ly/3XyAvIQ
