    Making an impact

Healthy Gamer has been hosting workshops with our Career Community on Discord. As a hiring manager, I’ve had the pleasure of co-hosting two sessions with Syaidah Awls, our HR Administrator. We had a great intro on how to get your first professional job in August, and a follow-up in October where we answered questions directly from the community. On October 29th, we’ll be hosting another workshop on job security, burnout, imposter syndrome, and other anxieties young people face in today’s job market. The best part is that these advice sessions we lead are based on our lived, real-world experiences. We both have adult children that we give advice, too. In our first workshop, we brought up the benefits of using your schools job fairs to connect with hiring managers. As it happens, my son, James McKim, attended his first job fair at the University of Louisville shortly after. He met with multiple businesses, and landed his first interview! Even if he doesn’t get the first job he interviews for, it gave him a chance to create and practice his “elevator pitch”. We try to provide real advice to help this digital generation: Put yourself out there! It gives you the opportunity to get better, and build confidence. And, it only gets easier every time you do it. I wanted to share that advice can help, and that I try to give advice as if I were talking to my own friends and family. It’s been truly rewarding to be able to use my experience to help provide perspective to our younger generations. If you’re interested in attending our next workshop, join us here on Oct 29th:

Mid-week reminder: The first step is always the hardest. But, it’s often our perception that makes it feel that way. Our minds have a way of looking at an unfamiliar task and making it way harder than it actually is. When you’re trying something new, remember that challenges are part of the process. Once you get past that initial mental block, you’ll find it’s not as difficult as you thought—and it only gets easier from there. Keep going. Every ‘first’ brings you closer to mastery. You got this! 💚

Heavy topic incoming. September is Suicide Awareness Month. Our #1 tip for leaders in the workforce is to understand your team's mental health. Yes, benefits are great. Yes, recommending therapy is great. Even better, is understanding the struggles of your team and things you can apply IRL to boost your team's culture. I asked Dr. Alok Kanojia MD MPH of Healthy Gamer how we can avoid burnout — and his answer surprised me. Basically, most of us have an unfortunate reaction to our content’s performance that looks like this: • When our content performs poorly, we blame ourselves. We think we are bad and we made a bad thing. • But even when our content performs well, we still don’t give ourselves the credit. We feel like we got lucky. So no matter what happens, we don’t feel good about our work or the outcome. Heads you win, tails I lose. So how do we fix it? The first step is attributing positive and negative outcomes equally. If you blame yourself for bad results, “blame” (praise) yourself for the good results too. Or, even better, recognize that ALL outcomes are outside your control to some degree. All you can control is your input. Take pride in the work and enjoy the process, regardless of outcome.
