Today is World Water Day! Thanks to Cement Association of Canada for sharing about our collaborative work to ensure a long-term sustainable water supply for the Sunshine Coast.
This World Water Day, we’re showcasing the work of shíshálh Nation, local government, and Heidelberg Materials North America in improving water security to British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. Crucial water security projects are being developed to solve the heightening water crisis due to drought on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast after an investment of more than $117 million from the Government of Canada through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund. The project, led by the shíshálh Nation in partnership with local government and with support from Heidelberg Materials, will involve upgrading the existing water treatment plant and constructing two large-scale water storage reservoirs to manage water within the Chapman Creek watershed, which currently provides municipal water to approximately 76% of the population of the Sunshine Coast. In the past, the Sunshine Coast has implemented tough water restrictions due to extreme drought conditions. Once complete, these new reservoirs will benefit local government and shíshálh Nation, by providing a more reliable and sustainable water supply during periods of water scarcity. The first of two reservoirs will be built on shíshálh lands within the Heidelberg mine site. This innovative project will use an existing mined out pit and convert it into a much-needed infrastructure project for the Sunshine Coast. As the climate changes and rain patterns change having secure stored water will be of great value to residents. The project will provide predictability for all residents on the Sunshine Coast connected to the Chapman system. It will change their collective future and bring us together. Water has always been cared for and seen as sacred by shíshálh people. This project is a new way of caring for that water. Lhe hiwus Lenora Joe stated, “The shíshálh Nation is excited and proud to be working in partnership with local government to address the ongoing water crisis. We are grateful for ongoing support from and collaboration of Heidelberg Materials. Climate change is impacting all of our lives and we must adapt. Through this project we are planning for future generations in innovative and thoughtful ways.” For more information, please see the news release: https://lnkd.in/eAdkBvCF
