At the Hennepin Healthcare annual meeting on October 23, 170-plus team and community members heard updates on how we are advancing our mission and responding to the health care needs our community has identified. We celebrated the many ways we join with our community to create a healthier future—by bringing health care right to a new parent’s door, by not just treating trauma but preventing it, by modeling world-class health equity and racial justice in medicine, and by supporting our incredible team in their health equity and learning journey. Tim Kummer, MD – Emergency Medicine “The people that work at Hennepin Healthcare don’t think twice when I ask them, ‘Do you want to go to Tanzania and teach EMS?’ They say yes. That’s how passionate they are. A few colleagues and I are working with emergency physicians in Tanzania to support their mission to create a functional EMS system in the Kilimanjaro region and eventually expand it country-wide. An unexpected benefit for us is that our team members who go to Tanzania come back feeling more equipped to work with our large East African population in the Twin Cities. Locally, we’ve done a lot of new work with the opioid crisis in Minneapolis. We partnered with a treatment organization to place peer recovery specialists in our Emergency Department to engage with our patients. In our fleet of ambulances, we added Narcan kits and fentanyl test strips for our medics to hand out to anyone who wants them. We are also one of the first EMS systems in the country to have a paramedic-led protocol for administering medications to treat opioid use disorder in the pre-hospital setting. We mesh our knowledge with community feedback.” Hennepin Healthcare Foundation is proud to highlight authentic stories from the wide variety of human beings who connect with our mission. We're pleased to welcome Mohamed Omar, MBA, MS as our new Chair of the Board of Directors. With this appointment, Omar makes history by becoming the first Somali American hospital board chair in the state of Minnesota – and perhaps one of the first in the country. Omar says, “Three years ago, I chose to serve on the Hennepin Healthcare board because I share this organization’s commitment to deliver high-quality, equitable care to all our patients. We can do this by building a board and leadership team that reflects the diversity of our patients and our community. My commitment is to deepen our community engagement, build more authentic connections between patients and team members, and build a confident future together.” CEO Jennifer DeCubellis expressed her appreciation for the three years of leadership Omar has already dedicated to the Board and for his willingness to assume this important role: “We are privileged to have a partner like Omar leading our board as we strive to carry out our mission more effectively each day. A stronger, more inclusive leadership team is the best way for us to become a stronger, more inclusive healthcare system. We are incredibly grateful that our Hennepin Healthcare Board, team, and patients will benefit from his leadership experience and his deep commitment to the health of our community.”
