This past week we heard from UPS which partially includes Coyote Logistics and we heard from C.H. Robinson. What did we learn??? The freight industry is navigating a transformative era marked by rapid changes and significant challenges (um 2020 was challenging to say the least). Job cuts, of course. Restructurings, yes. But, nothing new. This all sounds all too familiar (looking at you energy industry). The recent earnings reports from C.H. Robinson and UPS's strategic review of Coyote Logistics underscore the volatility and uncertainty in the market. Both companies have faced declining revenues and operational challenges amid fluctuating demand and excess capacity (remember FedEx just a couple weeks ago). UPS's consideration of selling Coyote Logistics signals a strategic pivot to address the drag on earnings caused by the brokerage unit's exposure to market swings even though Evan Armstrong, chief executive of research group Armstrong & Associates, Inc., said "comparing 2023 revenue with the prior year or two isn’t fair because of the record freight volumes sparked by a surge of consumer spending on goods during the Covid pandemic." (The Wall Street Journal) “In the long term, freight brokerage has been a very good sector,” Armstrong said. “The growth has been higher than other segments, so if you give it a chance it will probably bear fruit." Bear fruit, now where have I heard that phrase before? For UPS, I personally think they should be pruning, not cutting. However, this move reflects the broader industry's need to adapt to the changing landscape, where technology, efficiency, and strategic flexibility will be key to navigating the future. As the industry evolves, companies must reassess their operations and strategies to thrive in the dynamic freight market, highlighting the importance of innovation and adaptability in overcoming current challenges and seizing future opportunities. I know a few groups doing this right. One being, Capitol Trucking Inc. Jason Desanto who knows how to get the right team leaders in place with Nick Basalone at the helm executing a vision. They've listened to our suggestions and pruned instead of cut. Lets see if it all bears fruit.
