HMI’s Senior Director of Youth Development, Lazara Paz-Gonzalez, DrPH(c), spoke at Moody's Pride BRG's #NationalComingOutDay panel discussion on Wednesday, alongside other LGBTQIA+ youth-serving nonprofits. Lazara shared valuable insights into the challenges young people face when coming out today. The panel discussed how coming out has evolved, the unique needs of LGBTQIA+ youth, and the importance of supporting them during this pivotal moment. Reflecting on the event, Lazara said, “I had the privilege of being on a panel with people I deeply respect and admire, making it a truly enjoyable experience. I hope our conversation highlighted the impact and the ongoing need for services that ensure the safety of everyone considering coming out. Coming out is not just a one-time event; it’s something that happens time after time, sharing who we are and hoping that we are accepted as such.” (Photos: Ellis Hyman) #NCOD

Hetrick-Martin Institute reposted this
I had an incredible experience last night which served as a reminder of how grateful I am to be a part of the Hetrick-Martin Institute legacy. Generations of former HMI staff gathered together to celebrate one of our own as he took his place in the long list of HMI-ers who have contributed to the practice of uplifting and serving LGBTQIA+ youth. For those I currently work with, former colleagues, and those I’ve never met but only heard amazing things about I thank you for the fingerprints you have left on that long legacy, I am just so proud of who we are in community. Congrats, Sam Stiegler on your book Going Along With Trans, Queer, and Non-Binary Youth. Get your copy now!!!!!

HMI is grateful to partner with The Jed Foundation (JED) in safeguarding the mental health of New York youth. Dr. Laura Erickson-Schroth, Jed Foundation's Chief Medical Officer, also serves as HMI's part-time psychiatrist. JED has provided our staff with vital training on suicide prevention and intervention strategies. We were honored to witness Fidelis Care - New York and the Centene Foundation award a $1.1 million grant to the Jed Foundation, supporting the expansion of emotional wellbeing resources, workshops, and training programs that promote care communities across the state. Learn more about the grant and their important work at hmi.org/news/media/.
