HG Counsel Kevin Rieffel on IP implications of the new color tint feature in iOS18.
iOS18 allows users to give their Home Screen and App Icons a different color tint. I haven’t seen any Apple-produced images with non-Apple icons tinted red or purple or any other color. One might speculate allowing the tint might be an IP issue, likely in the trademark or copyright areas. Imagine you’re the app-icon designer and the time and effort you spent choosing the right hues is now dismissed; or if you spent years building good will with your iconic magenta logo which is now unrecognizable. Of course a user has to choose it and maybe there’s a provision in the developers’ agreement, but I wouldn’t be thrilled to see my logo in a flat grey color hidden among other monochromatic apps. https://lnkd.in/gRxF_nbK
