The Darien Gap between Colombia and Panama remains one of the most dangerous migration paths in the world and more people are risking their lives to cross it. Although the humanitarian challenges for those traversing the gap have grown in recent years, migrants face a shrinking humanitarian response in Panama and a growing, but resource constrained, response in Costa Rica. Our latest report from Rachel Schmidtke and Caitlyn Yates looks closely at the humanitarian conditions for those who successfully traverse the gap and outlines clear recommendations for the governments of Panama and Costa Rica to better assist migrants. https://lnkd.in/eG4XpDaf

On October 7, Noor*, a humanitarian worker and mother, prepared to take her four children to school in Khan Yunis. But that day, everything changed. Noor is one of more than 100,000 Palestinians who have fled the horrors of the Gaza war to Egypt since October 7. Displaced Palestinians in Egypt are in a precarious situation, unable to return to Gaza or legally integrate into Egyptian society. They face legal limbo without refugee or residency status, making access to education, healthcare, banking, and employment extremely difficult. Read her story in our latest from Jesse Marks. https://lnkd.in/eXDgg4me

One year on from the October 7th attacks, we remember and we mourn the victims killed by Hamas’ brutal and senseless attack on Israel. We remember and we mourn the victims killed by Israel’s indiscriminate and unrelenting war on Gaza since. The attacks and taking of hostages by Hamas on October 7, 2023 were clear crimes against humanity. The conduct of the ensuing Israeli military campaign in Gaza has also amounted to grave crimes against humanity. The world listens skeptically to contorted U.S. rationales for why leveling apartment blocks is wrong in Ukraine or Syria but acceptable in Gaza or Lebanon. They simply see total impunity–and IHL reduced to ashes. This war must end. Read our full statement from Jeremy Konyndyk. https://lnkd.in/eFP2i2Gu

#Lebanon is facing its gravest escalation of violence since the 2006 war. The UN reports that some 1,600 people have been killed and over 9,000 injured by Israeli military attacks in Lebanon over the last year, and Hezbollah rocket attacks on northern Israel and the Golan Heights have displaced 80,000 Israelis and resulted in several fatal incidents. The U.S. government has a unique ability – and thus a unique responsibility – to press for an immediate de-escalation before the situation spins further out of control. Allowing this conflict to persist will pose grave dangers to Lebanese civilians, to the many refugees who have sought protection there, and to the humanitarian organizations that serve them. "So many survivors came to the camp and told stories nobody has yet heard. We need a truth commission – when people can speak the pain in their hearts." This summer, president of Voice of Ezidis and Refugees International Refugee Fellows Program alumnus Farhad Shamo Roto, set up the Voice of Ezidis for the Truth of Genocide (VETO-G) camp, a tent outside the German Parliament, to mark the ten year anniversary of the #Ezidi Genocide and call for changed policies in #Iraq. Yael Schacher interviewed Farhad about this experience. Read more. https://lnkd.in/ePG22-Yt

Refugees International is deeply alarmed by the killing of more than 500 people – including two UNHCR staff – in Lebanon amid the rapid escalation of violence there between Israel and Hezbollah. A large-scale war in Lebanon would be devastating: humanitarian infrastructure across the Middle East is already strained to its breaking point. We call on the Biden administration and the international community to re-double efforts for immediate diplomatic de-escalation. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is committing mass atrocities and likely genocide in #Darfur today. The UAE is directly supplying arms, cash, and diplomatic cover to the RSF’s rampage—but continues to deny any involvement. Meanwhile, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is hosting two pre-season Boston Celtics v. Denver Nuggets games in the UAE next month. American rapper Macklemore canceled his concert in #Dubai over the country’s role in the unending conflict in #Sudan. It is now time for the NBA to do the same. Sign the open letter calling on the NBA to cancel the games and read more at www.speakoutonsudan.org

A major exposé in the The New York Times has revealed further evidence that the United Arab Emirates is providing direct military support to the Rapid Support Forces in #Sudan. The RSF has received a steady flow of UAE weapons as it conducts an ongoing rampage of mass atrocities throughout #Darfur. As President Biden prepares to meet today with UAE President HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan , we call on him to publicly condemn UAE support to the RSF. The UAE must immediately halt any further military support to the RSF. Our statement from @JeremyKonyndyk. #keepeyesonsudan https://lnkd.in/eDHra39d
