Greenville Technical College plays an important role in educating the workforce of the future, whether students earn credits through dual enrollment while in high school, earn a workforce ready credential, or enhance skills through continuing education. The search for a new president has begun as Dr. Keith Miller has announced his retirement. The public is invited to participate in the process by participating in public forums today. You can provide input on the presidential profile and about the community’s perspective on the opportunities and challenges the college may face in the coming years. If you cannot attend the forum, you can complete a survey to inform the development of the draft presidential profile. In our last post, we shared a video describing living wage. Living wages are the foundation of economic mobility. A living wage provides a stable foundation for individuals and families to improve their economic circumstances. When people can afford basic necessities, they have the resources to invest in education, training, and other opportunities that can lead to higher-paying jobs and improved quality of life. Econofact asked how much does income change from one generation to the next. Their podcast discussed the United States’ low levels of economic mobility, the differences in intergenerational economic mobility across demographic groups, and how there are “bottlenecks” that keep generations in their respective economic categories that cannot be explained by natural abilities between parents and children. At Hollingsworth, we believe that accessing and advancing in a career that pays a living wage is essential to improving economic mobility. Our primary goal is to strengthen pathways to career opportunities that pay a living wage and build assets for low-income communities, with an emphasis on Black and Hispanic/Latinx people. Yet, people often ask us what is a living wage. This video, https://ow.ly/GiVH50Tkc69 explains living wages. We align all our resources and join forces with our community to move from an economy that works for some to a just one that works for all. #advanceandthrive #greenvillesc #yeahthatgreenville #livingwage

Did you see the news last month that the City of Greenville is buying 6 acres near downtown to add affordable housing to the Haynie-Sirrine neighborhood that has been transformed by gentrification? He City is using a variety of sources to purchase the land, including more than $800,000 in accommodation tax revenue to fund the deal. Those tourism tax dollars, which come from purchases on hotel rooms, could not be spent on affordable housing until a 2023 change to state law. You can read more at https://ow.ly/4Ves50TkgiN. Hollingsworth was pleased to see this change in state law and now our city government taking advance of it to increase the number of affordable homes in Greenville. #affordablehousing #workforcehousing #advanceandthrive #greenvillesc #yeahthatgreenville
