About us

WORKING TO STOP GUN VIOLENCE IN CALIFORNIA Hope and Heal Fund is the only state-based donor collaborative fund investing in a public health, racially equitable, and community-based approach to decreasing firearm suicides and gun homicides, injuries, and trauma. Hope and Heal Fund partners with impacted communities on strategies to prevent and interrupt gun violence and heal from the trauma, harm, and generational inequities exacerbated by the lethality and coercive effects of guns in homes and communities. OUR COMMITMENT TO RACIAL EQUITY Hope and Heal Fund operates through a racially equitable framework. We support, advance, and focus gun violence prevention efforts with an understanding and acknowledgment of historical and ongoing racial inequities, with a commitment to actions that challenge, change, and prevent conditions that perpetuate or create inequities. Racial equity is a core value of our organization’s vision, outlook, and philosophy, and is embedded in our structure, policies, and process. OUR STRATEGY & APPROACH Hope and Heal Fund is working to improve, connect, and align all systems to equitably focus on gun violence and firearm suicide prevention, through a framework of prevention, intervention, and trauma and healing aftercare.

We are proud to work alongside The Battered Women’s Justice Project (BWJP), a close partner of Hope and Heal Fund. Their National Legal Center on Children and Domestic Violence is dedicated to improving safety for survivors of gender-based violence and their children. By centering the lived experiences of survivors, BWJP provides evidence-informed expertise to advocates, practitioners, and survivors, helping to create safer systems and prevent gun violence within the context of domestic violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a time to come together and raise awareness about the impact of domestic violence on individuals and communities. DVAM unites advocates, survivors, and supporters in the fight to end violence against women and children. This month, we recognize the progress made, but we must also acknowledge that much work remains to combat domestic violence, which is a leading cause of firearm homicides. Data discrepancies often obscure the true scope of the issue, misleading the narrative. It's crucial that we address these gaps and push for a clearer understanding to effectively end domestic violence. #DVAM #EndDomesticViolence #1Thing #SurvivorSupport #OctoberAwareness

🕯️ October 1st marks the tragic mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas. On this day in 2017, 60 lives were lost and hundreds more were forever changed by the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in American history. As we honor the memory of those who were taken too soon, we must also renew our commitment to preventing gun violence and supporting survivors of these devastating events. Our thoughts are with the survivors, the families, and all those affected by this senseless violence. At Hope and Heal Fund, we continue to design and elevate public health solutions to decrease firearm injuries and trauma and support communities impacted by gun violence. We must work together to build a safer future where such tragedies never happen again. https://lnkd.in/deK5uPND

Hope and Heal Fund applauds the White House for taking meaningful steps to address firearm violence and suicide with the recently announced executive actions. The additional $85 million in investments in community violence intervention is crucial to continuing the momentum in helping communities most impacted. Furthermore, we are especially encouraged by the focus on trauma-informed care through the Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Firearm violence leaves lasting scars, and providing mental health support to survivors and families is a vital part of the healing process. We're also thrilled to see a strong emphasis on safe firearm storage, which can prevent so many tragedies and help keep our communities safer.  These actions, among others announced, will help drive lasting change, and we’ll continue working with our partners to make sure that California—and communities across the country—benefit from these efforts. https://lnkd.in/gZapkiqi

Summer Read: Interrupting Violence by Cobe Williams and Josh Gryniewicz is a powerful and timely read that we highly recommend. Through his story, readers gain a deeper understanding of the complex intersections of urban violence, racial issues, police brutality, and poverty, especially in the context of the coronavirus pandemic and the aftermath of George Floyd's murder. We all have the power to make a difference by fostering genuine relationships and showing that we care. A simple act of kindness can remind someone that they matter and that they’re not alone. Take a moment to reach out to those who might be feeling isolated. Whether it’s inviting them for a walk, grabbing a coffee together, or just having a heartfelt chat over the phone, your connection can be a lifeline. #SPM24 #suicidepreventionmonth #SuicidePrevention

PART 2: The language we use when discussing suicide has a profound impact on how the issue is perceived and how those affected by it feel. At Hope and Heal Fund, we are committed to fostering conversations that are both compassionate and respectful, helping to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. Examples of Non-Stigmatizing Language: -Instead of saying "committed suicide," say "died by suicide." -Instead of "successful" or "failed" suicide attempt, refer to it as "survived an attempt" or "attempted suicide." -Avoid labeling individuals as "mentally ill" and instead say "person living with mental health needs."
