Our team recently conducted a workshop in Vietnam focused on using data to improve road safety! 🇻🇳 With 25 people from local government, media, and partner organizations including Vital Strategies, Global Health Advocacy Incubator, and AIP Foundation in attendance, we highlighted data visualization and strategic planning for road safety initiatives. #RoadSafety

PhD student Mohammed Gazali Salifu and Research Associate Simon Patrick Obi presented their research at the American Public Health Association 2024. Their poster, "Estimated Prevalence and Sex Disparity of Motor Vehicle Injuries (MVI) among In-School Adolescents with Reported Serious Injuries: A Multi-Country Analysis of Global School-based Health Surveys from 11 African Countries," highlights critical disparities in road safety for youth across Africa. They were also awarded the American Public Health Association's Injury Control and Emergency Health Services Presidents' Road Safety Scholarship for 2024—a well-deserved recognition. Globally, the leading cause of death among ages 5 to 29 is not malaria, HIV, or any disease, it is road traffic injuries. The burden of road traffic injuries is highest in #Africa. It is crucial to address this pressing issue. #Roadsafety must be a personal and government priority if we are going to save lives. Are you speeding? Are your children in a car seat? Are you wearing a helmet? I recently presented data from our work in Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, and Ethiopia at the Africa Road Safety Seminar 2024. Thank you to the Global Road Safety Partnership for convening this essential meeting. Khushbu Balsara, DDS, MPH represented JH-IIRU at the American Public Health Association 2024 in Minneapolis, where she presented research on "Gender and Geographic Disparities in Helmet Use: A Global Logistic Regression Analysis." Last Friday, I had the pleasure of speaking about pediatric injuries and road safety as a critical public health issue at the Argentinian Congress of Critical Care- Sociedad Argentina de Terapia Intensiva - in Córdoba. I had the opportunity to showcase the work being conducted by the #BIGRS initiative and our Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit in the city, and engage in valuable discussions with colleagues on strategies to raise public awareness about the leading cause of death and disability in children over 5 years old. Together, we continue to push for greater attention and action on this preventable crisis. During the 'Strengthening Governance' session, she highlighted the pivotal role data plays in helping governments make informed decisions on road safety.
