It's a day of peopling today! ☕️ Starting off with an in-person coffee shop meet-up with a local friend, on to a virtual coffee chat with a college classmate from 32 years ago! (We have not spoken since then! She sent me a DM here a year ago saying she'd looked at my profile and posts and wondered if I remembered her. Because life is the way it is, we are finally getting to chat today!) 👩⚕️ Then this evening, I meet with a nursing student for a first-time tutoring session on one of my favorite topics - literature reviews for research. The Growing Pains: Losing Old Friends and Facing Criticism Growth ain't always a walk in the park. Sometimes, it feels like you're trudgin' through a briar patch, leaving behind pieces of your old self - and some old friendships too. When you start chasin' bigger dreams, some folks might look at you like you've got two heads. Old partners might feel left behind, and habits that once felt comfy as an old collar might start to chafe. This was absolutely terrifying for me when I first experienced it in a big way. But remember and recall this simple truth each and every day: You have to prune the old branches to bare new fruit. Heal yourself from the inside out so the hurtful things folks may say or may treat you doesn’t steal your future success and legacy. In the end you will say, “it was never between me and them, it was between me and the impact I was made to make”. They aren’t against you, they are just not ready to do the hard work to grow to the next level yet. Be as humble, compassionate, and patient as possible, but do not compromise your dreams and the discipline it takes to win in this world. But here's the thing about growth - sometimes you gotta shed your old coat to grow a new one. It don't mean you love your old friends any less; it just means you're runnin' on a different trail now. Where is your community? I’ve had the privilege of supporting Aveda Institutes across the U.S. In a recent post, I shared that I was a keynote speaker for Aveda Institute of Des Moines where I talked about the ripple effect and impact on communities. While I was there, I noticed this pamphlet and the message “friends helping friends” that really resonated with me because of the passion I have for co-creating community and forging new relationships. For over three years I’ve been very successful with my Living With Intention podcasts, yet those connections seem to be temporary, and I felt there was something missing: a solid community. While I enjoy traveling across the U.S. and meeting new people and exploring exciting things is wonderful, and at the same time it can also be isolating. Having a community of people who truly care, offer support, and share wisdom and enhance other people’s lives. This is true abundance that provides a deeper connection that money can’t buy. I am grateful to be part of the Hounds Of Business Community and for the founder Mike Ashabraner who is a perfect example of Living With Intention by creating a space for professionals who want to connect and thrive together! Community is about friends helping friends, and it is important to grow your roots within the community for stability and growth. Seizing Opportunities Have you ever experienced that moment when you put something out into the universe, and suddenly an opportunity presents itself? But here's the challenge: sometimes we hesitate to grab that opportunity, knowing full well we might regret it later. We're all aware of how difficult it can be for men to open up about their experiences with cancer. It's a topic that often goes unspoken, leaving many to face their battles in silence. The family suffers as they feel the affects on partner, father or friend. Imagine having the opportunity to attend an event where a 31-year brain cancer survivor shares his journey. A chance to hear firsthand about the challenges, the triumphs, and the lessons learned along the way. That survivor is me.
