Sabrina is originally from Mississippi and has resided in her new apartment since August 1st! She said that meeting Beverly, with Housing Collaborative, was nothing short of a "blessing". She and her children were homeless and in and out of hotels for three years. Although the children are now teenagers, “and I don’t have much time to spend with them. I am grateful to get the time I have. My 17-year-old son has never had his own room and since moving here, he doesn’t desire to hang out anymore.” She told Ms. Beverly that she didn’t want to be in a loud/rough area, so Ms. Beverly worked with her, provided her places, and talked to her through her most stressful times. She said her prayers were answered. Not only is she in a great location, but her kids are also back in school and have doctor's appointments scheduled. Sabrina was also able to reconnect with her sister after 15 years and meet her nephew. Sabrina wanted us to know that this was the best gift since giving birth. She said that “sometimes you just need a little help” and Housing Collaborative was hers. She added, “you cannot move forward without having stable housing, and it’s hard to work when you are worried about where you are going to sleep and what you are going to eat.” Sabrina, again with tears in her eyes, wanted to thank Housing Collaborative and most importantly, she wanted us to know that Beverly said she was going to "get it done", and she did. She is slowly but surely getting her life back on track. When asked if she had any additional updates, she said, “I love it here.” Welcome home, Sabrina!

Say hello to Nika, who manages The Stevenson at Brightwalk under S.L. Nusbaum! We saw her this past week and she said "thank you" for all that we do. She will remember us when more units are available! Partnerships like this are integral to being able to serve more folks with their housing needs. If you're connected to a multifamily development, please consider becoming a partner with us as we're in need of new housing opportunities in an ongoing capacity; there are more people in need of housing than units available.

This is incredible news, but there is still work to do! Let's keep going!

"In July 2024, Charlotte-Mecklenburg learned the good news that we no longer trail the nation in our ability to lift children and families out of generational poverty." Our Interim President & CEO Kathryn Firmin-Sellers reflects on the Opportunity Insights team's latest research, the progress Charlotte has made and how investments into people and places, like United Neighborhoods, are helping pave the way for future success. The City of Charlotte’s Corridors of Opportunity program and Housing & Neighborhood Services department are excited to offer the Lowe’s National Night Out Grant to eligible neighborhood organizations. Thanks to generous funding from Lowe's Companies, Inc., neighborhood organizations can receive up to $400 in reimbursement for expenses related to National Night Out (NNO). This grant is available now through Aug. 5, 2024, or until funds are depleted—whichever comes first. To be eligible for the grant, your neighborhood must be located in one of the six Corridors of Opportunity: cltgov.me/corridors-map. Please be advised that NNO event addresses and start times may be shared with Lowe’s for their awareness of the neighborhoods they are supporting through this opportunity. Eligible neighborhoods can apply by visiting the Lowe’s National Night Out grant application page: cltgov.me/4c7cHRN. If you have questions, please feel free to contact nichelle.wilson@charlottenc.gov. #NationalNightOut #CorridorsOfOpportunity #NeighborhoodGrant

We just stopped by to drop off a care package to Edward yesterday! He has resided in his home for nearly a month now! He said that he was first at the Salvation Army, then went to transitional housing before securing his current home. He worked with Te'ana at HC, who he appreciated greatly, but at first, he was not happy about the options that were given to him. They continued to work together to find him the perfect home within a senior living community. Edward was a man of few words, but he wanted us to know that he is happy and content with his new living arrangements and wanted to thank everyone that was involved.
