About us
Communities In Schools®(CIS™) is a national organization operating in more than 2,900 schools nationwide that ensures every student – regardless of race, zip code, or socioeconomic background – has what they need to realize their potential in school and beyond. CIS connects students to caring adults and community resources that help them see, confront, and overcome the barriers that stand between them and a brighter future. Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CIS-Charlotte) is an affiliate of the national organization, working locally inside 50+ Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CMS) schools. Together, with our CIS affiliates across the country, we are creating a powerful change movement made up of peers, students, and alumni committed to building an equitable path to education for future generations. OUR MISSION is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. WE ENVISION a community where every child and family thrives and is positioned for positive economic mobility. WE BELIEVE that transformative relationships are key to unlocking a student’s potential. We will succeed by including in our strategies, ingraining in our culture, and reflecting in our behaviors, principles and practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a result, we break down immediate and systemic barriers to create and sustain equitable outcomes.

We had great visits at WEST MECKLENBURG HIGH SCHOOL and Westerly Hills Elementary Schl yesterday with our VP of Programming, Clinton Reynolds, M.A., and Dr. Ingrid W. Medlock with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Dr. Medlock is CMS Chief of Staff and Community Engagement, and our newest CIS board member. We loved having this opportunity to highlight our work to support students and strengthen our communities.💖 And a special shout-out to these CIS team members: Alexis Bibbs, Quenesha Davis, Franasia Greene, Takiya Dawkins, and Tiffany Tyson! 💯🌟 #communitiesinschools #cis #cischarlotte #beingpresentmatters #allinforkids

LOTS of books for lots of students! You know it’s a #MarvelousMonday when you can thank this great group of volunteers for giving several hours of their time on a Friday to sort, organize, and package 500 books to distribute to 35 schools! Many thanks also to Park Road Books and their generous customers who purchased and donated the books on the “Book Tree” in the store in December with all the students’ “book wish” ornaments. This favorite holiday tradition benefiting our students has been going on for more than 20 years! 🥰💯🎉 Thank you for giving the gift of reading and their very own book to our students!❤️ #parkroadbooktree #giftofreading

KUDOS to these kiddos - AND their CIS Site Coordinator Tiffany Tyson at Westerly Hills Elementary. Ms. Tyson and her students kicked off their first group meeting of the year by thinking about their Goals for 2025. She gave each student a coloring page template with these Goal statements for them to fill in the blank: ✔️"I want to improve my grade in _______________ " ✔️"I want to read _______________ " ✔️"I want to go _______________" ✔️"I want to learn about _________________ " Ms. Tyson understands that it's important for students of every age to set goals to strive for, whether academic, behavioral, or personal. Doing it together makes it fun and students can get ideas from each other. Ms. Tyson also uses these meetings with her students to remind them how important it is to be in school every day, to help them reach their goals. What an excellent way to begin the New Year and new quarter in school! 💯👍 #Goals #NewYear #BeingPresentMatters #inschooleveryday

We are so grateful for all of the dedicated site coordinators, mentors, and volunteers who form part of the CIS family and make a powerful difference in the lives of young people by consistently showing up for them. The value of a caring adult in a student’s life and connections to resources are essential to ensure student success. #NationalMentoringMonth #BeingPresentMatters

Sharing this post from our Communities In Schools National Office as we remember the life and legacy of President James “Jimmy” Earl Carter, Jr., and his impact on Communities In Schools: Communities In Schools (CIS) joins the nation in celebrating the life and legacy of 39th President Jimmy Carter. While he was widely regarded as a humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize winner, he is also known to our organization as one of the driving forces behind CIS’ evolution from a grassroots nonprofit based in Atlanta to a national organization and educational movement, serving millions of students annually. We honor and acknowledge President Carter for the lessons and lasting impact he and his family have left for generations to come. #AllinforKids Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eEjuQxRG

The late President Jimmy Carter's legacy touches millions of individuals, organizations, and communities here at home and around the world - but some may not know that it includes #CommunitiesInSchools. With deep gratitude for Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, we share this wonderful article that tells the story of President Carter's significant impact on CIS and its expansion to a national network of hope and support for millions of young people across the U.S. today. https://lnkd.in/eS6EYVHV
