As Medicaid undergoes its most significant changes in decades, with over 24 million people disenrolled since pandemic-era protections ended, there are silver linings. North Carolina recently joined 39 other states and Washington, D.C., in expanding Medicaid eligibility, offering coverage to more than 500,000 residents, including those like Trisha Byers who faced the financial strain of being uninsured. Despite fears that Medicaid “unwinding” would drastically increase the number of uninsured, these expansions offer a crucial buffer, extending healthcare access to lower-income individuals, pregnant women, and children. While the full impact remains to be seen, these moves underscore the essential role of Medicaid in our national safety net. The end of the continuous coverage provision for Medicaid in March 2023, following the COVID-19 public health emergency, presented significant challenges for millions of Floridians. During this period, Florida's Medicaid program swelled by 1.4 million enrollees, bringing the total to over 5.7 million. As the state began the Medicaid redetermination process, known as the "PHE unwind," advocates across Florida mobilized to prevent unnecessary loss of coverage due to procedural issues. The "Florida Medicaid Unwind Collective," a coalition of organizations including the Florida Policy Institute, Florida Health Justice Project, and UnidosUS (@WeAreUnidosUS), among others, played a pivotal role in this advocacy. Their combined efforts ensured that procedural disenrollments—when individuals lose coverage due to administrative errors rather than eligibility changes—were brought to light and addressed. The coalition's work ranged from collecting and analyzing data, raising public awareness, providing legal support, and holding state agencies accountable for their role in the redetermination process. This collective advocacy not only protected vulnerable populations but also set a precedent for how states can approach similar challenges in the future. The collaboration between these diverse organizations exemplifies the power of unified action in addressing complex healthcare issues. The 2024 KFF Women’s Health Survey provides critical insights into abortion experiences and the impact of the Roe v. Wade overturn on women in the U.S. Among women of reproductive age, 1 in 7 have had an abortion, with higher rates among Black (21%) and Hispanic (19%) women compared to White women (11%). Since Roe was overturned, nearly 1 in 10 women know someone who has faced significant challenges in accessing abortion, often needing to travel out of state or dealing with financial barriers. Despite these obstacles, over 60% of women express concern about the effects of abortion bans on life-saving care, yet less than half are aware of their state’s current abortion laws. The survey also highlights a shift in contraceptive practices, with 17% of women making changes in response to the Dobbs decision. Public sentiment remains strong, with a majority supporting the legality of abortion in most cases and opposing leaving the decision to individual states. These findings underscore the ongoing challenges and concerns surrounding abortion access in the U.S., particularly as we approach the 2024 election. Abortion remains a critical issue in the U.S., with significant implications for women’s health and rights. #WomensHealth #AbortionRights #KFFSurvey #Healthcare Read the full article here: knowledge-attitudes-among-u-s-women-2024-womens-health-survey/
