This neurosurgical tool looked “medieval” until a Northwestern University student reimagined it. Northwestern Department of Neurological Surgery #NMBetter
Did you catch us on WGN-TV? "In a busy neurosurgery ICU, we can easily be doing these procedures at least once a day, if not more." Medical Reporter Dina Bair takes us to the International Museum of Surgical Science, where a cranial drill from 1785 looks shockingly familiar... She contrasts today's standard for cranial drilling with the advanced automatic stop and safety features of Hubly Drill. Hubly Surgical is dedicated to elevating neurosurgery to the 21st Century. Industrial Design & Product Strategy Consultant | Creating iconic physical design solutions for companies of all sizes
While safety factors are always critical when I am developing toys, packaging, housewares and interactive devices, this is the first product that I have designed that is used to SAVE LIVES. "Hubly Surgical, spearheaded by CEO Casey Qadir, came to me (in collaboration with Ontogen Medtech engineering group) with a proof-of-concept for a groundbreaking cranial drill, and a vision to become the standard of care for bedside cranial access and make today's lethal complications a "never event." Before diving into the physical design, based on product and user research, I defined the following Design Criteria and Principles: DESIGN CRITERIA: - One-handed use - Minimize risk, considering hygiene and safety at every user touchpoint - Ergonomic and balanced handling - Steady, stable, and non-slip grip - Direct, intuitive controls and feedback DESIGN PRINCIPLES: 1. Streamlined: Unobtrusive, seamlessly integrated features. No unnecessary steps. 2. Multisensory control: Strong visual and tactile cues. Pronounced interactive features. 3. Scientific Efficacy: Precision performance with dynamic feedback. This is what folks are saying about the FDA-cleared drill that is now in use, saving lives: “The Hubly Drill streamlines this life-saving cranial surgery procedure with its one-handed design that bolsters stability, ease of use, and speed.” Dr. Effendi shared: "Hubly Drill was easy to use and safe. It had a great weight and strong feel, bit the bone well, and didn't slip. Hubly is the first bedside-ICU neurosurgical drill suitable for this millennium." “Hubly Surgical's life-saving tech blows peer-reviewed tests out of the water.” _________________________________________________ I’m Emily Moyer.
