Did you know that mountain biking is more popular than ever? Participation in this thrilling sport has doubled over the past six years making it one of Australia’s most popular outdoor sports. HumanAbility was proud to attend the inaugural Mountain Biking (MTB) Symposium, hosted by Outdoors NSW & ACT in beautiful Merimbula on the NSW south coast. Peter Bourke of Bicycle Industries Australia, Nick Hannan of AusCycling, and Samantha Palmer FIPAA of Austrade shared insights on the growth of the MTB industry. With over 400,000 participants annually, MTB is now a key player in the outdoor recreation landscape. Presentations highlighted critical industry issues, including the rise and impact of E-Bikes, sustainable trail construction and maintenance, inclusion, land management, and tourism impacts. HumanAbility’s Stakeholder Engagement Advisor, Dan Waters, and The Scout Association of Australia (Scouts Australia) CEO, Jeffrey Lehrer, took the opportunity to present our Outdoor Recreation Qualification Review Project, engaging with industry leaders to discuss how MTB can be integrated into this important review. With a spotlight on aged care and the transformative reforms already underway, HumanAbility was delighted to take part in the 2024 Aged & Community Care Providers Association National Conference in Adelaide to explore the theme ‘Age of Excellence: Inspire, Innovate, Impact.’ As the Jobs and Skills Council for the aged care sector, we understand the power of collective learning and applying innovative practices to build a stronger aged care workforce and ensure world-class care for older Australians. HumanAbility CEO, Emma King OAM addressed the conference, highlighting the cross-sector challenges across the care and support economy and foreshadowed the upcoming release of our Workforce Plan which details several proactive initiatives to build a resilient workforce. Emma also joined a panel alongside CEDA - Committee for Economic Development of Australia Chief Executive, Melinda Cilento, SHEPPARTON RETIREMENT VILLAGES INC CEO and ARIIA Board Director, Veronica Jamison and First Assistant Secretary for Market and Workforce in the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, Emily Harper. The panel concluded showcasing the career paths available in the aged care sector and sharing its positive story of job satisfaction and dedicated professionals is critical to attracting more people to the sector. It was also fantastic to hear from Minister for Aged Care, Hon Anika Wells MP who reiterated the Australian Government’s commitment to passing the Aged Care Act and noted the investments made in the sector. Insights from global experts also provided valuable perspectives on where Australian aged care is world-leading and where further improvements can be made. Former Socceroo and human rights advocate, Craig Foster AM issued a powerful call to action, urging everyone to ‘say yes’ to embracing reform and meaningful change – a sentiment we wholeheartedly share. Thank you to ACCPA for the incredible opportunity to engage and learn! #HumanAbility #ACCPA #AgedCare #Workforce #Innovate

The Midwifery Futures modelling report has revealed the critical workforce shortages facing the profession with not enough midwives or students to meet future demands. HumanAbility’s Executive Director of Engagement and Communication, Jennie Courtney, attended the launch of the report led by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia report at the National Gallery of Australia. The two-year project involved stakeholder consultation, a yarning circle, research and engagement with consumers and people with lived experience. As well as highlighting the workforce challenges, the report also found that high rates of burnout, stress, and job dissatisfaction are driving one in three midwives to consider leaving the profession. Thank you to NMBA for the invitation and we look forward to ongoing discussions on the intersection of VET and tertiary education in health for the safety and wellbeing of all Australians.
