How can proteins be used as a template for biomineral growth? Fatima Davila, Jim DeYoreo, David Baker, and their colleagues at the University of Washington and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory published work using their Hummingbird Scientific in-situ liquid flow TEM sample holder (https://lnkd.in/guhTaK9) to investigate the nucleation and growth of hierarchically structured calcium carbonate biominerals using de novo-designed protein templates to program biomineral nucleation. Under in-situ TEM observation, designed helical repeat (DHR) protein templates directly nucleated nano-calcite particles, subsequently assembling into oriented calcite mesocrystals. Nucleation throughout the solution was observed as well as near sheet-like Ca2+-incubated supramolecular assemblies, with nanocrystal size and polymorph tailored by varying the design of the protein templates. The tunability of the DHR proteins allowed for comprehensive investigation of the interface driving the nucleation templating, with implications for hybrid organic-inorganic materials with novel functions such as carbon sequestration. See the comments below for a link to the full paper. How are phase-pure actinide oxides synthesized? Appie Peterson, Stefan Minasian, and their colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley and Berkeley Lab published work using the Hummingbird Scientific tomography sample holder (https://lnkd.in/e-DciNN) to perform STEM and EDS characterization of fully-stoichiometric neptunium and plutonium dioxides synthesized using precursor molecules subjected to mild thermolysis. Samples were characterized by STEM-EDS and powder X-ray diffraction confirming the formation of stoichiometric NpO2 and PuO2. The Hummingbird Scientific tomography sample holder optimizes spectroscopic signal collection with its ultra-high stability and reduces unwanted signal with its low-profile tip. The results indicate that the stoichiometric control is due to the preformed metal–oxygen bond in the precursor, while the oxidation state is predetermined by the precursor coordination complex. The high-purity synthetic samples can be synthesized under mild, inert conditions and are suitable for characterization techniques aiding nuclear forensics, nonproliferation, and spent fuel degradation.
