How does temperature affect the radiolytic growth of Pd nanocrystals? Serin Lee, Frances Ross, and Jeung Hun Park from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Princeton University, along with Tommy Watanabe from Proterial, Ltd. published work using the Hummingbird Scientific In-situ Liquid Heating TEM sample holder (https://lnkd.in/gqyW7fM9) to grow Pd nanocrystals in a liquid heating cell under transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The team combined kinetic analysis of nanocrystal growth at 25 °C and 50 °C with a radiolysis model to identify growth regimes and their underlying mechanisms. At early timestamps, growth is surface reaction-limited and increases with temperature. Beyond a transition time, the growth is limited by supply of Pd ions via diffusion and reducing hydrated electrons, leading to reduced temperature dependence once the two are in balance. The liquid heating holder, combined with radiolysis calculations, has enabled investigation of the role of temperature in surfactant free nanocrystal synthesis, and will inform future optimization of nanocrystal structure, size, and morphology. How can liquid metal coatings improve battery performance? Supriya Koul, Akihiro Kushima, and their colleagues at University of Central Florida and Honda R&D Asia Pacific Co. Ltd. published work using their Hummingbird Scientific in-situ biasing nano-manipulator TEM sample holder (https://lnkd.in/geDiZXq) to perform in-situ battery performance testing on lithium metal cathodes coated with a liquid metal (LM) layer. Using the nano-manipulator, drop-casted LM nanoparticles were brought into contact with the Li metal oxide cathode for electrochemical testing of the LM coated electrode, which indicated a reduction of galvanostatic charge-discharge overpotentials compared to an un-coated current collector. The LM also facilitated the decomposition of dendritic lithium, slowing degradation of battery interface connectivity. The demonstration of improved wettability of lithium using LM will improve solid-state battery cycle performance and lifetime.
