Looking ahead for Community of Hope: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our homeless population is continuing to grow. The recent numbers for the point-in-time count have been released and our population has grown by roughly 100 individuals in our area. Community of Hope is excited about being able to alleviate the struggle with our homeless population growing, by focusing on filling the gap in affordable housing. The other thing we’re very excited about is getting to share the work that we are doing with our partners Third Lens Ministries and Chapman Sisson Architects to bring this vision to life. Thank you for tagging along with us on this journey! Community of Hope will care for people who have experienced long term/chronic homelessness. Many of our friends have been homeless for 5, 10, or even 20+ years. At that point they have experienced a tremendous amount of trauma. At this time there are 179 chronically homeless living in Huntsville. One of those is a dear friend, Becky, that has undergone many instances of trauma in the homeless camps that she has been in. Our role is to bring Becky and those like Becky into a community where they are loved and cared for. This allows for our friends to begin the healing process from the trauma they have endured. This place will allow them to settle into the rhythms of home. Home allows for restoration and healing. It creates a space where friends can begin to think about the future and next steps. The goodness that will exude from having a home is limitless and I welcome you to join us in bringing our friends, like Becky, home. Together, we can do it! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #homeless #huntsville #al #huntsvillealabama #alabama #homelessness #communityofhope #endhomelessness #bringthemhome #dogood

There are many practices that we have put into place to encourage and develop leaders, volunteers, board members, etc. The primary one we want to highlight is a day in the camps. To understand what Community of Hope is and what we are charged to do, you must know the people you serve. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We often challenge people to visit the camps alongside us and take nothing. Most people that find themselves in service opportunities take materialistic items with them. In the homeless sector you think of items like food, clothing, personal hygiene items, propane, tents, blankets, seasonal gear, shoes, etc. These items bridge the gap from the person that is giving out the items to the person that is receiving the items. These materialistic goods often take the relational pressure off the person that is serving. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you are challenged to take only yourself you must depend on verbal communication and personality skills, the act of serving can become more difficult. You may struggle with how to relate, what to say, or even how to feel. It’s this uncomfortable feeling that allows you to have a deep understanding of the people we serve. Furthermore, that uncomfortable feeling develops into an unquestionable understanding of the mission of Community of Hope and a deep passion for the people we serve. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Being in the camps allows these leaders in our organization along with community partners to have an undeniable reason to fight for our homeless community. Finally this practice fulfills two of our corporate goals; to transform the way people view the stereotype of the homeless and to connect human to human, heart to heart through fellowship. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #homeless #huntsville #al #huntsvillealabama #alabama #homelessness #communityofhope #endhomelessness #bringthemhome #dogood
