About us
In November 2016, a group of family members and professionals gathered to address the epidemic of substance use disorders and specifically the alarming number of overdose deaths. Realizing that incarceration, shame, detachment, and harsh interventions resulted in poor and sometimes deadly results, this group decided to incorporate the nonprofit Not One More Alabama (NOMA). Organizers stepped into the public eye and began sharing their personal experiences to help others who were impacted by the disease of addiction and stigma associated with it. NOMA is working to erase the stigma associated with addiction by raising awareness, providing evidence-based education and support to families in our community. Evidence shows that detaching and isolating from a friend, co-worker or loved-one suffering from an alcohol or substance use disorder is ineffective and dangerous. Treating someone with dignity and compassion is a much more effective strategy. Anyone touched by addiction should be armed at all times with Naloxone (sold as Narcan). Naloxone is an opioid antagonist and can quickly reverse an overdose, yet many in the state of Alabama are unaware of how to obtain it. No prescription is needed and it will soon be available over the counter. Just ask a pharmacist for naloxone and you might save a precious life. Since forming in 2016, NOMA has hosted numerous educational, community and fellowship events including the popular End Addiction HSV Walk at Big Spring Park, Recovery at the River, Grief Support Workshop retreats, and weekly Family Support Group meetings. NOMA has also enjoyed a partnership with the Addiction Prevention Coalition in Birmingham and the Drug Education Council in Mobile to provide online and in person statewide educational events. Big plans for the recovery community are in the works for Huntsville and surrounding areas. Stay tuned as our community’s generous support allows us to strengthen and grow.

We mean it when we say we could not pull off an event like the #endaddictionhsv walk without our incredible base of volunteers. Almost 100 positions were needed and filled! Less than a handful of the 100 were unable to serve due to illness and others stepped in to help. You cannot beat those statistics when you are dependent on support. That is one of the key messages taken from the End Addiction Walk: WE ARE HERE to SUPPORT our community. #connectionmatters #familysupport #peersupport #volunteersrock For more photos of the Walk, please visit https://lnkd.in/gpAbAC_D Carla Bugg, Shannan Roberts, Hollie Walther, Lisa Stangle, Glenn Maxey

When life gets tough, it's natural to seek someone to talk to. But who should you turn to? Friends and therapists both play crucial roles in our emotional well-being, but they offer different kinds of support. Understanding the value of each can help us navigate our feelings more effectively. 1. Talking to a Friend: Emotional Support and Connection Friends are our go-to for sharing joys and sorrows. They know us, care about us, and offer comfort without judgment. The bond with a friend is based on mutual trust and shared experiences, which makes talking to them feel natural and comforting. When we share with friends: Instant Emotional Relief: Friends offer a quick outlet for our feelings, providing a sense of relief. Validation: They help us feel understood and less alone in our struggles. Perspective: Friends can offer advice or a new way of looking at a situation based on their knowledge of us. However, friends are not always equipped to handle deeper psychological issues. While they can listen and empathize, they might lack the tools or objectivity to help with more complex problems. 2. Talking to a Therapist: Professional Guidance and Healing Therapists, on the other hand, are trained professionals who can help you navigate your mental health. They offer a safe, confidential space to explore your thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. When you talk to a therapist: Expert Insight: Therapists are skilled in identifying patterns in your behavior and thoughts, helping you understand the root causes of your issues. Structured Approach: They use proven techniques to guide you through your challenges and support your mental health journey. Long-Term Growth: Therapy can lead to deeper self-awareness and lasting change, equipping you with tools to manage future challenges. Therapists provide a level of expertise and objectivity that friends, no matter how caring, cannot. They help us dig deeper, uncover hidden issues, and develop strategies for coping and growth. The truth is, we need both friends and therapists in our lives. Friends provide the immediate, day-to-day support that keeps us grounded, while therapists help us work through the deeper issues that can impact our overall well-being. By embracing both forms of support, we can foster a healthier, more balanced approach to our mental health. Illustration credit: @igototherapy
