After strenuous journeys to find safety in the United States, or after decades of building lives of stability in this country, people facing deportation are often isolated from their families and left to fend for themselves in an unfamiliar court of law – without an attorney. As an immigrant himself, Rep. Robert Garcia, and co-sponsors Rep. Norma Tor Torres and Rep. Delia Ramirez, introduced the SHIELD Act – “Securing Help for Immigrants through Education and Legal Development.” This bill will help communities build the needed legal workforce, provide essential support to those facing deportation, and keep families together and communities strong using a common-sense solution. Join us, America's Voice, Vera Institute of Justice, National Partnership for New Americans, and National Immigrant Justice Center and urge Congress to support the #SHIELDAct now! https://lnkd.in/g-4Mz_WG

It is no secret that legal representation is a game changer in immigration court. Steps toward addressing the immigration backlog and bringing fairness and due process to our outdated immigration system are urgently needed. Thankfully, progress is being made: Last week, Rep. Robert Garcia introduced the SHIELD Act, legislation that would provide $100 million in grants aimed at expanding the legal workforce defending immigration cases. For more on the SHIELD Act and how it lays the groundwork for states and localities to meet their immigrant communities’ representation needs, click ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ekfU9Zis

🚨 ICARE Condemns Biden's Border Shutdown: We are outraged by President Biden's decision to shut down the border. Even though unaccompanied minors are exempt, this action harms countless families fleeing violence and undermines our humanitarian values and legal obligations. We urge the administration to reconsider and pursue humane solutions that address the root causes of migration. Let’s uphold compassion and justice. Share and let your voice be heard! 📢💬

Happy Immigrant Heritage Month! This month we shine a light on how immigrants enrich our communities, foster innovation, and strengthen our democracy. Join us to celebrate our joy, our main character energy, our heroic journeys, and all immigrant and refugee communities. This year, we also uplift the 3.5 million #NewAmericanVoters who became citizens since the last presidential election and their journeys to this country, toward U.S. Citizenship, and to the polls as first time voters. 🌍🗳️ #ImmigrantHeritageMonth 🎨@claudiomke

When you’re up against well-resourced government lawyers in a highly complex court system, you shouldn’t have to defend yourself alone. Yet, this is the reality for millions of immigrants facing deportation--including unaccompanied immigrant children. That's why ICARE is fighting for universal legal representation and the passage of the #FairnessToFreedomAct. Every individual deserves a fair chance, regardless of resources. Join us in advocating for fairness, dignity, and respect for all immigrants. Together, we can make this world a reality. https://lnkd.in/gp8JB6dP #Uniting4URep #UniversalRepresentation
