Advancements in AI are changing the landscape of diabetes care, particularly with remote patient monitoring (RPM). With one in three Americans living with prediabetes, AI-enabled RPM has the potential to detect early signs and help prevent the progression of diabetes, saving lives and reducing healthcare costs. By offering personalized insights and real-time health data, AI is empowering patients and healthcare providers to manage diabetes more effectively. At identifeye HEALTH, we believe the strength of any company lies in its people and culture. On the latest episode of the The Healthtech Podcast with Dr. James Somauroo, our CEO, Vasiliki (Vicky) Demas, shares her insights on team building and how her leadership philosophy has shaped identifeye HEALTH. “For me, building the right team is so important that is worth that extra effort to really find the right person that will add value to the team” She also reflects on her early days, from helping develop breakthrough diagnostic tools at T2 Biosystems to receiving the call from Google that led her to become one of the founding members of Google Life Sciences (now Verily). A study in Nature Portfolio highlights the potential of self-imaging optical coherence tomography (SI-OCT) to enhance diabetic retinopathy screenings. SI-OCT allows patients to capture high-resolution, 3D images of their retinas, with trained clinicians reviewing the images to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment plans. Results showed that combining fundus photography with SI-OCT significantly improved both sensitivity and specificity for detecting diabetic macular edema (DME)—a leading cause of vision loss among people with diabetes. The study also found that incorporating SI-OCT is a more cost-effective approach, saving costs by reducing unnecessary referrals and missed diagnoses while improving patient outcomes. Technologies like these could improve diabetes care by enhancing early detection and ensuring more people receive timely and effective treatment. Diabetic Retinopathy remains the leading cause of vision loss for working adults. Early detection remains the most promising avenue to preventing further vision loss and AI can aid in this. A study in Cureus Journal of Medical Science analyzed the current landscape of AI-enhanced detection for diabetic retinopathy from fundus images. Researchers say advances in computer vision and deep learning technologies have improved accuracy and efficiency in the screening process. However, there are still challenges, such as ensuring these tools work effectively across different populations and seamlessly integrating them into clinical practice. New findings published in JAMA Ophthalmology suggest that placing eye screening programs in primary care settings can improve the detection and treatment of eye diseases in underserved communities. In the study involving over 1K patients from low-income communities in Michigan, 55% had not had an eye exam in the past two years. This led to undiagnosed conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy. These findings highlight the critical need for accessible vision screenings in primary care settings, especially in areas where insurance, cost, and awareness are barriers. A new study from the University of Houston College of Optometry aims to understand who might be at risk for future vision loss. The study will analyze the vision health of patients with prediabetes and diabetes. By investigating both the front and back of the eye, as well as different types of glucose dysfunction, this research could lead to better preventative strategies and, ultimately, help preserve vision. https://lnkd.in/exCPvPVR #DiabeticRetinopathy #EyeHealth #EarlyDetection
