PhD Candidate @ KU Leuven and Etch by EnergyVille | | Design, planning and secure operations of multi-GW electrical energy hubs
Today my IEEE Power & Energy Society general meeting in Seattle came to an end with the 'Offshore Energy Island/Hubs' panel (moderated by Prof. Dirk Van Hertem), where I presented our Etch - Energy Transmission Competence Hub ideas on electrical energy hubs/energy islands. On Tuesday, I could as well present my research on topological actions for AC/DC grids during the student poster session. Thanks everyone for the great conversations, I am happy to see that grid topology optimization and congestion management are getting increasing attention. My work is supported by the FOD Economie / SPF Economie / FPS Economy with the DIRECTIONS project in which Etch - Energy Transmission Competence Hub - EnergyVille and KU Leuven collaborate with Elia Group to explore the future of electrical energy hubs/energy islands.

Thanks to James McCalley (Iowa State University), Aidan Tuohy (EPRI), Jianwei (Jay) Liu (Exus Renewables), and Robyn Koropatnick, PEng PMP (Stantec) for inviting me to the two Super Sessions, “Planning for Uncertainty in Power Grid Operations” and “Role of the Public in Grid Planning and Operations,” at the IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting in Seattle. During these sessions, I had the opportunity to present RTE Réseau de Transport d'Electricité's perspectives on the future of the electricity system. Achieving a carbon-neutral system and ensuring France's energy sovereignty requires electrification, leading to increased electricity demand. Citizens, industrial and society have to play a vital role by adjusting/shifting their consumption and practicing energy conservation (#Ecowatt). Building new infrastructures is key to integrating renewable and nuclear energy and meeting growing demand. Adapting these assets to #climatechange and ensuring they respect #biodiversity, are also essential. In parallel, with the fast-paced changes in the energy sector, developing and implementing advanced #flexible solutions are critical for managing uncertainties and optimizing existing assets (like DLR, batteries, and automation). Collaborations and R&D among all energy stakeholders are essential to shape the future of the power system! Thank you to the other panelists for the presentations and discussions: Debbie Lew, Rajiv Porwal, Naoki Kobayashi, Grain Adam, Veronika Rabl, Anurag Srivastava, Hong Chen, and Jian Fu.

Have very much enjoyed attending the IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting in Seattle this week! It’s exhilarating to connect with the brilliant minds in the power and energy sector and to explore the latest technological advancements. I found the dialogues between academia and industry particularly engaging. Witnessing how this collaborative effort drives progress in the energy transition is truly inspiring! The enthusiasm I've seen this week has really reminded me of why I was drawn to the power and energy space in the first place. Some topics that I found particularly interesting: - Physics-informed ML/AI models for power system analysis and optimization; - Inverter-based resources, their roles in microgrids and how they help improve grid resilience. Also had a great time connecting with friends and colleagues from GE Vernova as always! #IEEEPESGM #PESGM2024
