A nonprofit professional urban planning organization serving the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties in California!
About us
The American Planning Association (APA) is a non-profit professional research organization committed to urban, suburban, regional, and rural planning. APA is the result of a merger between the American Institute of Planners (AIP), founded in 1917 and the American Society of Planning Officials (APSO), established in 1934. The organization has 46 chapters which generally correspond to state boundaries and is further subdivided into regional sections. This section is one of eight in California and covers Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. San Bernardino is the largest county in California and Riverside is one of the fastest growing counties in the state. The Inland Empire Section (IES) of the American Planning Association has over 500 members, representing the public, private, and academic sectors.

This year's APA California Conference was my first in years without a job to do. What a pleasure to take it in through the fresh lens of my new role with the City of Fresno, and to see the planning first started in 2018 for a Riverside conference finally come to fruition after two COVID cancellations. Congratulations to the board, host committee, and staff for successfully bringing 2,000 of California's planners together in vibrant Riverside to learn, connect and celebrate! (and sometimes commiserate...)

Wrapped up the annual APA California 2024 Conference and left feeling so inspired! Saw so many sessions that sparked new ideas, including a few standouts from my local section - Cencal APA (talking about you Carolina Ilic, MCP, AICP and Sara Allinder) Special shoutout to APA Inland Empire Section who’s CHC and group of volunteers put on a hugely successful conference - from educational sessions to mobile workshops to just showing off all the cools things to do in Riverside and the Inland Empire! Excited to bring what I’ve learned back to the communities I work in!
