It has been a busy week for team iFAB! Intersect Illinois hosted a Women in Economic Development Forum and featured iFAB leader Laura Appenzeller. The University of Illinois Research Park also hosted Founders Week with Jack Marck, Kim Kidwell on a panel together. Thanks to Gerald O. Wilson, PhD, MBA for the iFAB time on the Founders Week agenda.

Illinois Fermentation and Agriculture Biomanufacturing (iFAB) Tech Hub
About us
The Illinois Fermentation and Agriculture Biomanufacturing Tech Hub (iFAB) is poised to become the global leader in precision fermentation and biomanufacturing — an industry expected to grow to $200 billion over the next 15 years. Leveraging biology as a manufacturing technology of the future, iFAB is uniquely uniting world-class R&D, industry leaders, innovative startups, scalable infrastructure, abundant feedstock production, unparalleled transportation networks, and strong relationships with corn and soybean suppliers within a 51-mile radius. This unique lab-to-line approach establishes the iFAB region (Champaign, Piatt, and Macon counties) as the preeminent destination for the biomanufacturing industry. iFAB leadership includes representatives from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Champaign County Economic Development Corporation, Economic Development Corporation of Decatur-Macon County, and University of Illinois Research Park.

Thanks to Special Competitive Studies Project - SCSP for visiting us yesterday. Can't wait to have you back to see other parts of the hub and the progress we make.
🌐 On the Road Exploring BioTech Innovation University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s iFAB Tech Hub 🌐 This week Special Competitive Studies Project - SCSP’s Abigail Kukura, Karina Barao, and I - spent time with our new friends at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s iFAB Tech Hub. It was a fantastic visit. Beth Conerty, Nicole Bateman, Carly McCrory-McKay, and so many others showcased the impact of the CHIPs and Science Act and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s U.S. Economic Development Administration Tech Hub program. It’s people like Beth Conerty, Carly McCrory-McKay, Nicole Bateman, and so many more people that make sure huge pieces of legislation become a reality. America’s land-grant universities are always among the coolest educational institutions to visit. Following last week’s events at Hoover Institution, Stanford University’s Bio-Strategies and Leadership Congressional Fellowship Program, it was great to visit with friends that see biology as a strategic domain. Where will #SCSPTech visit next? Watch this space! #LandGrantUniversities #Innovation #CHIPSAct #TechHubs #BioTech For those that are new to bio and iFAB: The Illinois Fermentation and Agriculture Biomanufacturing Tech Hub (iFAB Tech Hub), led by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, seeks to scale precision fermentation to convert underutilized corn feedstocks into high-value, customized alternative proteins, food ingredients, materials, chemicals, and more. By leveraging its regional assets in corn and soy feedstocks, food processing infrastructure, and research leadership, this Tech Hub will provide a domestic biomanufacturing testbed through the development and deployment of multi-use pilot and demonstration capacity and equipment for biomanufacturing innovators, while also training a skilled workforce. In July 2024, EDA recommended this Tech Hub receive grant funding of approximately $51 million.

Congrats to iFAB RIO Beth Conerty on her University of Illinois College of ACES Funk Award! Beth was recognized with a Professional Staff Award for Excellence in Advising, Teaching and Outreach. "We are truly honored to celebrate this year's Funk Award winners," Dean Germán Bollero said. "Their exceptional commitment to advancing research, education, and community service captures the essence of our college's mission. They inspire each of us to explore new frontiers, exemplify leadership, and uphold our profound land-grant tradition with renewed vigor and purpose." Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gZhA6kAS

The University of Illinois System tour stopped in Decatur this week. There are a lot of great collaborations between the city and the University system, but we're biased and were excited to show System leadership how iFAB embodies this relationship. Thanks to iFAB members ADM, Richland Community College, Primient, and Synonym for the participation.

We often get asked what our target end product is, but iFAB's unique approach is to be end product agnostic. We are here to leverage biomanufacturing to advance many products and industries. Today, we celebrated with our Strategic Partner and University of Illinois Research Park tenant MicroMGx as they cut the ribbon on their Champaign Lab. iFAB and Integrated Bioprocessing Research Laboratory are supporting many startups in their agricultural biologicals. https://lnkd.in/gbaSNizV

Congratulations to Zhao Huimin on the iBioFoundry. Synthetic Biology, high-throughput strain engineering and validation is fundamental to driving innovation in biomanufacturing. This addition to the Champaign-Urbana community expands the resources in this critical technology space. iFAB is here to scale those strains as soon as they're ready! https://lnkd.in/gh2tb-46

A great example of the collaborations and momentum that iFAB is working to build.
We are excited to celebrate this new collaboration with iMicrobes targeting a more sustainable method to produce acrylic acid. This is more evidence of the momentum and capabilities in Central Illinois in biomanufacturing. iFAB Tech Hub will be a catalyst for more of these partnerships. https://lnkd.in/grUftbMs
