In a 2023 survey by Mintel, a third of gen Z makeup consumers reported they buy makeup dupes, and nearly three-quarters of all makeup consumers said they believe affordable makeup products work just as well as premium makeup products. In the dupe-friendly beauty environment, shoppers prize getting a good deal on a product that performs from brands known for dupes like Revolution Beauty, Fine’ry, Dossier, Milani, Essence and E.l.f. Cosmetics. In particular, E.l.f. Cosmetics’ success has warmed investors to dupe businesses. Claire Chang, founding partner of igniteXL Ventures, says, “E.l.f. Cosmetics is a great example of transitioning from imitator to innovator, capturing significant market share and building loyal customer bases of their own.” But not every beauty investor has fallen head over heels for the dupe model.
